We're going to be updating the site's template quite a bit towards the end of this year, and we're introducing an all new banner system to go with it. Unfortunately, that means monthly banners are going away. While we've greatly enjoyed rotating banners, we want to move to a more structured format and provide the site with more consistency. When the new system is completed, you will be able to select your favorite banner from a list to make FA look the way you want.
We want artists to have a chance to jump the line, and start working on banners ahead of release! We're releasing our new template so you can get started on ideas!

Oh well! I like the idea of having a full banner. :3
New banners will be added in to the system each month, users can choose which banner(s) they will view.
(I'm also convinced the banners will be static once the choice is made, since the wording of the announcement seems to indicate that)

Yea, you're right.
(Not sure how that would handle for users not logged in, and if the banners would rotate or be static)
And when we say "better" we don't always mean better art. Perhaps a better theme, more fun. Cell-shading can be just as amazing as detailed paint. But it has to be unique and fun.
Also how will these banners scale on smaller screens? (phones, tablets, smaller monitors.)
Also, we've got something in store to replace the rotating banners, but that's for another announcement.
Hey, you should fix the dleteing of submissions ;p so we can select more then one in order to delete, something that should be considered in the new update!

Download GIMP. It can open .psd files.
I'd slice it up and save it into a .pdn file for you, but seeing as it's not my file, I don't know how they'd feel about that.
(Aka me as well. I used GIMP in the past.)

You're not going to put a new banner up each month
But you're going to have a new banner each month. :p
In my opinion, banners should be added to the submission list, under artwork, and you can equip them with a button on the page.
And may jus' jump on the bandwagon and perhaps try out doin' a banner! Would be a fun try to do! :)

Oh, reminds me of the change to the new UI that totally happened last summer just as announced
I run at an 'average' resolution, since the 1280x800 is my laptops optimal native resolution, and that's almost 1/5 of the screen realestate right there gone because of full width/height banner.

That would just make my life easier if I could put pictures in journals though haha.
I have a fairly large screen, in my opinion, and it doesn't even have an option to get that large. If you're going to make your banner that big, what's going to happen to those of us with smaller screens? Because if the banner determines the width of the site, forcing users to have to scroll right just to check their Notes, then this is a terrible idea. A site should be easy to use, first off, and then secondly, nice to look at. You can't sacrifice ease of use for appearances.
TL;DR
Please tell me the banners will automatically resize to the set browser window's width.
If I have to scroll just to see the end of comments, you better believe I'm adblocking the banner first chance I get.
Just saying, if they crop/scale, why even make them so wide in the first place? 8I
They probably picked 2200 as the width because screens and resolutions are only getting bigger. They want a banner that will fit ALL screens; they don't want some high-end users to be left out with random blank space on their screen because they have a 1920x1200 screen and the banner is only 1600xwhatever.
If it makes you feel better, they also changed the preview banner resolution to 1094x187.
Hence everything else on the page expands to fit the new format
But, another question: does this mean I could submit a new banner every month?
(I'm still on the hunt for a job, so the occasional $60 for art supplies and groceries would be very nice! hahaha..)

When will this being kicking into gear?
I will continue using the desktop version on my phone so long as I can get it to work. I'm never comfortable with mobile versions of any site, because functions are always omitted.
This banner is seen in full on my phone, and does show the log out, though it would be nice to see where a generic "username" link and the SFW will be placed. (Wow...I just noticed I can't see my whole line of text. If I zoom out more, each letter is under 1/32" tall. Selectable width would be appreciated.)
I.e.- Drawing Fender as a Chocobo from the Final Fantasy series, and Rednef as a Pokemon.

I think that would be a great way to both allow user customization, or have it rotate as it does now, along with the new layout.

Quite frankly if you want to spend $60 a month, you could save it up and hire a new coder and maybe, possibly get the site up to date and fully functional instead of picking new "methods" on how you make the site visually appealing. But, you know, that would be logical, and I forget that's not something you admins know about.

Like if there was a selection of 7 banners, 6 are static and unchanged and the 7th be updated monthly with submissions.
It would be nice if multiple file formats were posted.

But I would be certain your message went through.
When the new month rolls around, 3 or 4 new banners will come out. You can either keep the one you have up, or you can pick from one of those. So you still get the benefit of 'ohh, what's it going to be this month'.
The reason they changed it was because of harassment. When a new banner came out each month, inevitably some people would not like it, but they were taking it to the extreme and going to the artists page and telling them their art sucks and they should die and numerous other terrible things. So basically FA users are too immature to handle monthly banner and that's why they had to go away.
i really prefer that you keep the size of the banners you have right now

Is it too late to make a suggestion? When clicking a smiley icon to add it to a reply to a submission (Like I am doing here), the text entry cursor focus is lost, and beginning to type after inserting a smiley without clicking back in to the text box will usually result in the cursor focus moving to the next item in the tab order: which is the "Post" ("Add Reply" in the beta) button. I can't tell you how many times this has resulted in me accidentally submitting a reply before I'm ready. I know it can be easily prevented if I would train myself to manually return my cursor focus to the text box via the mouse... but... as a lazy American, I just want the computer to automatically do it for me. :^) This of course, requires the coder to change the behaivior on the back-end... no small feat, I know. If you find it in your heart to make a change to this behaivior, that'd be really cool.
I know it is a beta, but I'm obligated to say it: do you intend to change the way the replies look after posting? Right now, the header (With subject and date/time the reply was posted) currently retains the gray/blue background that the in-use "live" version uses. This doesn't quite fit the "flavor" and "feel" of the rest of the bata template. Perhaps changing it to match the header bar at the top of the page (Where "Browse", "Submit", "Community", etc are listed) would help it fit in with the feel of the rest of the template.
Otherwise, looking great so far!
Oh - is there a better place to offer feedback/suggestions on the beta? I am assuming that you are interested in getting feedback. if not.. uh.. let me know so I stop wasting your time and mine by being overly-wordy here. :^)
