For making aluminium extrusions, first the design is created for making the die cast. A well designed die cast has many advantages including output of high quality extrusion, maximum utility of the extrusion, and minimum usage of alloy material. Die cast engineers and company designers should ideally work together to come up with most ergonomic designs.
Once the die casting has been done, extrusion can be made either by hot chamber process of cold chamber process.
In hot chamber extrusion, the material is heated before it is loaded into the chamber where the die is already placed. By applying pressure, the alloy material is pushed out of the die. Sometimes liquid nitrogen is added to avoid the creation of oxides in the extrusion.
Cold chamber extrusion is carried out at room temperature. Again for pushing out material external pressure is applied. This process ensures that the extrusions are faster, stronger and have better surface finish than the ones made by hot chamber process.
Once the extrusion is done, it is cut into desired lengths.
Finally, the extrusions are heated over ageing ovens to speed the ageing of aluminium and in process hardening the extrusion.
