Basic Concepts of Aluminium Extrusion
Found in abundance in earth’s crust is a silver white metal known as aluminium. It is high on strength, low on price, lightweight, and corrosion resistant - making it a much sought after metal in the industrial world.
What Aluminium Extrusion means?
However, it’s not aluminium but aluminium extrusions that are most useful in the industrial world. Aluminium Extrusion in Wikipedia is defined as:
A process used to create objects of a fixed, cross-sectional profile. The two main advantages of this process over other manufacturing processes are its ability to create very complex cross-sections and work with materials that are brittle, because the material only encounters compressive and shear stresses. It also provides excellent surface finish to the finished parts enhancing the appearance significantly. Compared to steel, Aluminium has one third density and rigidity; thus, it bends more easily into various shapes without compromising on strength and stability. Process of Aluminium Extrusion
For making aluminium extrusions, first the design is created for making the die cast. A well designed die cast has many advantages including output of high quality extrusion, maximum utility of the extrusion, and minimum usage of alloy material. Die cast engineers and company designers should ideally work together to come up with most ergonomic designs.
Once the die casting has been done, extrusion can be made either by hot chamber process of cold chamber process.
In hot chamber extrusion, the material is heated before it is loaded into the chamber where the die is already placed. By applying pressure, the alloy material is pushed out of the die. Sometimes liquid nitrogen is added to avoid the creation of oxides in the extrusion.
Cold chamber extrusion is carried out at room temperature. Again for pushing out material external pressure is applied. This process ensures that the extrusions are faster, stronger and have better surface finish than the ones made by hot chamber process.
Once the extrusion is done, it is cut into desired lengths.
Finally, the extrusions are heated over ageing ovens to speed the ageing of aluminium and in process hardening the extrusion.
Benefits of Aluminium Extrusions
Aluminium extrusions have no welded joints, and are therefore stronger and can be moved around with ease. This makes the assembly of extrusions much easier as there is no requirement for welding or painting. In addition, there is smooth surface finish and the design looks attractive. The extrusions have multiple usages in automotive, retail, construction, display, stage setting, marquees and many other sectors.
What about the vendors of Aluminium Extrusion
Aluminium extrusions are being manufactured by many companies today. A manufacturer with specialized skill in extrusion process must be preferred. For instance, the vendor must have understanding about how design plays a role in extrusions. Moreover, by using the right alloy, a manufacturer can significantly improve the overall utility of the extrusion and the productivity of the machine in which it will be used. In fact, China is coming up as a major hub for aluminium extrusion manufacturers. Well-known names like P&A International have modern facilities for aluminium extrusions and die casting in China and provide their services to manufacturers all around the world. This way they are able to provide high quality at affordable prices.
Aluminium extrusion has changed the way humans interact with metals. All that one needs to ensure is that extrusion vendor they choose has the requisite expertise.
