The Last Art Tutorial You'll Ever Need
with special guest, Quinlan Septer!
Quin and I have a love/hate relationship with art tutorials that claim to tell you "How To Draw ______", and such was the inspiration for this live discussion. This will not be illustrated, and it will not be only for artists. I'm confident you'll find something to love if you show up! More relaxed than my typical Q&A. This should be a good time.
This talk is happening TONIGHT! Wednesday, 8PM EST. At the following link:

Q: Do I need to be a Patreon member?
A: Nope, just click that link.
Q: Art tutorial? I'm not an artist!
A: Bro, it's just clickbait. Kinda. You'll love it. Trust me.
Q: How do I ask a question?
A: Click the Q&A icon in the Hangout to use and open the app.
Q: Can I see it later?
A: You can! It's GOING TO BE RECORDED SO JUST CLICK THE LINK

Are you going to re-
Just kidding man. Knock it out of the park.
I've never actually thought of approaching a day the way i approach a painting. There's a certain way I always do that, there are definite steps and my work more or less always comes out how I want it to. Thinking of other things, and especially life, in that way... I think that's going to be very helpful. I have to really fight a lot of the time just to get out of bed at a decent hour.
Also the point about having to know the rules and being able to follow them before you can break them, pertaining to artistic style, totally true, and also totally relevant to both art and life.
I loved the whole thing, I'll probably be watching it a few times just to see if I glean anything else; I like listening to talks and stuff while I art.
The cave you fear holds the treasure you seek is also great guidance, actually. Many people insist that you should do the thing you're scared of, assuming that the thing you're scared of is somehow pertinent to goals you want to achieve.
Though you didn't ask, something that's been on my mind lately that seems relevant is this: I advise that you learn to love the feeling of salt being poured in your wounds. Adopting a sort of philosophical sadomasochism is one of the better ways of handling criticism and setbacks. When you can actively enjoy the misery of being torn apart by critics, including yourself, when you can tell that hardships and crises are making you a better person and sort of revel in them even when they're killing you and you can actively enjoy the pain you're inflicting on others because you're provoking them into growth, you've got it. Being able to appreciate what a bad ass some crisis was turning me into, assuming I survived it, has gotten me through a bunch of rough places grinning like a Cheshire cat even while I was shaking and breaking down under the pressure.
thanks for the thorough feedback. Glad you loved the video!
I'm beginning to learn that it's more loving and more respectful to tell people what they don't want to hear. I told someone a few months ago, who has a tendency to make terrible decisions and seek validation for them before following through with them, " I'm always on your side, which means I will not always agree with you." I'm seeing that I need to cultivate this kind of attitude in professional life as well as personal life.
These videos have much more to unpack and process than I can deal with in a single message. Long story short though, this couldn't have come to my attention at a better time in my life. So thanks for what you're doing.
Who was the name of your friend? Quin was it? :3 I would love to see his work since you're saying how epic it is haha :D.
Quin's name and work is linked in this journal. C:
