After Math was always when the big shootouts happened. Nobody ever would have guessed that Thomas -- king of the quadrangle -- would lose it all that day, least of all to that peasant fox Jeremy. The even greater surprise went down later that day, however.
Jeremy, eager to examine his tiny glass war trophies, ditched 5th hour to sneak out past the old elm. There, he tugged open his well-worn marble sack with a bit too much force, tearing the burlap and sending the precious orbs inside cascading to the ground. His fevered search through the thick grass to find his lost booty was so intense that he failed to notice the young rabbit until they nearly bumped heads.
Surprise at seeing Thomas there, hunkered down to the ground scouring for marbles quickly gave way to panic -- those were Jeremy's marbles now, rightfully won! Just as the fox was about to assert his claim, Thomas extended his hands, overfilled with marbles: an offering of peace, paired with a rare smile from the rabbit, who was terribly shy away from the marbles court.
For months to come, that spot would remain a special one for Jeremy and Thomas, though marbles soon gave way to other sorts of games...

He was all, "omg, the archways in the loggia in that school courtyard totally remind me of de Chirico's work."
So then I was all "omg, de Chirico's work makes me think of the Japanese cover to the game ICO."
So then he was all "omg, I love ICO."
And I was all, "hells yes you do! and Shadow of the Colossus, too."
And he was all, "yessss! when are they making their next game??? will it be for ps3?"
And I was all, "soon, dude! and yeah, it'll be on ps3 omg it's going to be RAD."
And then they both lived happily ever after <3

Great story, but even better illo! Love the feeling of renaissance Italy here, what with that big courtyard and plaza! Wonderful perspective and texture. And look, red!! Love the tears and shine on the shoes. Great details all over the place. You can really feel you thinking about stuff.
Thanks, dude! There are a couple of really boneheaded errors in there, but I don't know that I have it in me to go back and fix them now ^_^ Haha, I get pretty ruthless with these single-sitting pieces -- it's actually nice that I have someplace to post them because that prevents me from just obsessing over tiny details. I think I'll learn a lot more by calling this one done and starting fresh on a whole new composition the next time I get a chance to sit down to paint.
And yeah, the red saga continues ^_^

Hmm, I'm not sure what you J-reading level is, but I really like Murakami Haruki and Miyabe Miyuki's stuff. Something like Kitchen by Yoshimoto Banana is a pretty easy/fluffy read, and is cute and fun. For even lighter stuff, Shigusawa Keiichi's Kino no Tabi (Kino's Travels) books are fun (the author senselessly romanizes his name as "Sigsawa Keiichi" if you need to look him up that way), although I think his ideas are a lot more interesting than his writing style, which is kind of grinding until he catches his stride...
Um, other than those, I recently super-duper loved Kemono no Souja ("Performer of the Beast" might be a decent quick-and-dirty translation of the title) by Uehashi Nahoko, and Kimura Yuichi's Arashi no Yoru ni makes me cry <3
If you were more interested in books in English translation, I'd probably recommend sticking to the first three authors I mentioned -- any of Jay Rubin's translations of Murakami's stuff makes for a fun read. Go get A Wild Sheep Chase or Hard Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World and give that a read ^_^

Very nice, the red theme continues and it looks as great as it did in previous pictures! I think the story made the image go from a 'Hey wait..what happened here?!' to an 'Awww...cute, little obviously gay boys in very high shorts become friends!' type of thing!
Seeing you put out these pictures just makes me wish I wasn't so slow with my learning, and it really inspires me to find a crate of energy drinks and just work on art all day to some nice ambient music!

This one was done to the Decemberists -- it's a very Youth and Beauty Brigade kind of painting ^_^
And yeah, I've been lucky to have a bit of a break from work (which I think ends today 9_9), so I've been able to pretty much sit down and crank out a pic a day. This latest round has taken me in the neighborhood of 3~6 hours to do, with the Hobbes pic and the "decisions" one on the 3 hour end and the "city wiener" and this one more on the 6 hour end.
I look forward to painting more so I can get faster, too! The real pros crank stuff like this out in like an hour -- it's totally gross <3

Thanks ^_^ I wanted to set them apart from the background (though I'm not really sure why...) so I knew I wanted them a different color from the very beginning. The red gave it some of the drama I wanted, and then having the school be hell of dark and bleak made it even more like, "OH GOD, IT'S THE MARBLE APOCALYPSE."
Omg, that comment is so prescient! I was just down at Peet's with my gay roommate, and he ordered his gay latte with soy (gay!), but they made it with real milk instead, so they had to make him another. They were just going to throw it out, so they offered to give it to us and I wound up walking home with iced tea in one hand and a latte in the other.

No joke, son. You and me both.
Middle school is some seriously Lord of the Flies shit. We're refined enough as people to really know how to destroy other people, but we haven't quite grown the empathy to prevent us from using that knowledge.
Talking about Thomas Hobbes, he would definitely agree that middle school is, "solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and (thankfully) short."

Thanks ^_^ Initially, it was trying to keep myself from doing the "figure floating in space" thing that I used to do (and still do occasionally when I'm feeling really lazy, haha) by making an effort to add *some* kind of background. More recently, I'm also trying to have the picture tell *some* kind of story -- even just a very simple one. I don't know that I'll spell out the story I had in mind like this often, but it was fun to write a little glimpse into these kids' future this time around.
Hey, a piece like this is good enough without the story...but if you can give a glimpse into what was motivating you behind said piece, it's double the sweetness. It's so much more powerful that way...and that's why you have such a following. If I could draw as well as I write...man, I think I would have paparazzi!
The real question is were you playing marbles...in SHORT SHORTS???
Hehe, thanks dude! It was nice and simple to carve the characters out using just the two colors (with a lighter pass afterwards for the brighter highlights, I guess). I was a little worried that they would stick out too much, but I think it worked out okay ^_^

That was my favourite sort of writing, the kind where the rest of the story unravels out of my mind like a carpet.
(My version is of a memorable but ultimately fleeting young romance. Still a much nicer thing than the awful shit I put my characters through. >_>; )
My only regret is that when I save the picture file, I can't save the story as well. Lost a good amount of things I wrote for other people's pictures that way, from gallery transfers or deletions.

I gotta say, I love just going through your gallery and reading all the little stories and inspirations and set ups that you get with your artwork. Its almost addictive see the little extra detail you in telling us about your process and whatnot. I really admire that and I just just love your pieces even more because of it.
