i was commissioned by
furryskibum to do a piece illustrating the concept of duality, free to render it however i chose as long as i included his character [which is the tiger/cheetah mix pictured in there]. since the majority of the knowledge i have of the definition of duality is related to either taoism or buddhist, vedantic or samkhya philosophies, i went with an eastern philosophic theme. i think taoist was the easiest to illustrate, if only because the yin/yang symbol is so widely recognized.
stolen from wiki: "The complementary dualistic concept in Taoism represents the reciprocal interaction throughout nature, related to a feedback loop, where opposing forces do not exchange in opposition but instead exchange reciprocally to promote stabilization similar to homeostasis."
I personally reject the western ideas of mind and body being separate, and also found it would be harder to illustrate something like that [that wasn't, you know, a picture of some guy with an open head with a bubble of stuff floating out].
red and green, hunter and prey, male and female, fire and wood, day and night, forest and desert... what appear as opposites are really balances of nature. many opposites cannot function without each other.
i hope someone asks me to illustrate nondualism, so i can send them a blank canvas and tell them "in painting, there is no painting". 8|

Okay, um.... WOW. :D
There is so much crammed in here in such a smooth fashion, I don't know how you did it. I must admit that when I thought up the duality thing, I was envisioning something more dark and brooding. This, though, is just amazing! I've always loved the concept of Yin and Yang, and you went and made a piece of art that not only makes me ponder life, but is bright and full of life itself! I can't thank you enough, Mitsene. This is so wonderful. :3
