ANTHRO XVI
The world around me was full in vivid images and color; the purest and richest imagery that I had ever seen. Faces, people, and things – those that I had not seen in years. The faces I recognized but couldn’t place a name or association with. People who seemed so familiar but at the same time so alien.
“Donovan!” A female voice called, her voice soft and sweet, but distant. “Dinner’s ready!”
The images shifted, suddenly there were two smaller figures before me, both of them playing with toy trucks in the sands of a playground.
“Whup, got to go guys! Mom’s calling me home for dinner, I better get going” A voice rang out from somewhere, certainly not from the two young people in front of me as I was seeing their faces focused on their trucks as they looked at me, their lips not moving to the words I heard.
“Aww! Ok Donovan, so will you play tomorrow, then?” The one on the right asks, his blonde hair was cut short and combed forward neatly, his blue jeans shorts, and knees were covered with sand and dirt, his pin striped shirt was wrinkled and need ironing.
“Yeah, Donovan! Will you play after school?” the left one asks; a freckled face, pale skinned kid with tattered jeans and a white tank top.
“Yeah, but I’ve got to do homework first! I’ll see you guys tomorrow!” the voice is heard again as my view shifted, turning towards an apartment complex in the middle of a suburban town. There at the door of the third house from the left is a tall, lanky woman at the doorway. Her brown hair is neatly put up into a bun, her sweat pants and athletic t-shirt slightly blowing in the summer breeze.
“Coming mom!”
I cold feel the heat of the sun bearing down on my as I closed the distance, but as soon as I began to cross the street a car came turning my way, speeding fast.
I closed my eyes instinctively as I could hear the breaks squeal, and the sound of the woman’s voice screaming, “DONOVAN, NO!”
There was nothing else, no noise or pain…nothing but darkness…until I opened my eyes again. It was now that I found myself somewhere else, the sound of music blaring an uptight beat, various voices could be heard talking and the sound of glass bottles clanging around.
I could see inside of someone’s house, their tabletops and furniture covered in beer bottles, red solo cups and ashtrays littered with cigarette butts. The smell of smoke and alcohol was overwhelming, along with the odor of sweat and perfume. I could see close to 30 people chatting amongst themselves, some were dancing to the beat of the music, some were lying on couches, asleep while others were laughing and carrying on.
“Dude, you ok?” An older voice called, somewhat deep in tone but still relatively young, a voice belonging to a mid-20s year old male. My vision turned to the source as I placed a hand upon my head – a HAND!
“I…I don’t know…I’ve got a headache, feel dizzy and my stomach hurts” a voice responds, once again not knowing where it comes from.
The man before me shakes his head, his blonde hair flowing with the motion as he looked at me with blue eyes, his sleeved tattoo arm and hand lifts dismissively, “You’re such a rookie, man you know that? You’re drunk!” He laughs before taking another swig of a beer.
I look down to the beer, before setting on the coffee table before me. “You done for the night? But you’ve only had like 3!” the blonde-haired male asked.
“Yeah…I don’t like being drunk…I’m ready to go home, I had fun, but I don’t feel well…” I realized the voice was coming from ME! Was this MY VOICE? It sounded so different!
“Go home? And how you going to get there?!” the blonde haired guy asked curiously setting his beer down.
I feel myself pull something from my pockets, before holding something out, shaking it – hearing the metal jingle and recognizing it as a set of keys…car keys?
“You’ve been drinking, you’re not driving tonight!” He replies sternly.
“Really, I’m fine! Besides I only live a few miles away, what could go wrong?!”
“Let’s see, you could wreck and get hurt or worse, you could get pulled over by a cop for drunk driving and get your license suspended and car impounded or hurt someone else!” he said concerned as he went to grab for my keys which I pulled away quickly.
“Dude, I’m fine! Really! I just feel a little sick is all, I swear! I’m not drunk! If you want to take my keys you’re going to have to fight me for them!”
“I’m not going to fight you Donovan…you’re my best friend, man! I just don’t want to see you get hurt, please! You can spend the night here!” He pleaded.
“I appreciate it Ray, but I’m fine…I’m going to make it home safely and I’ll call you to let you know I made it, ok? Deal?” I held out a pinky.
He hesitated for a moment, his blonde hair falling over his eyes as he hung his head nearly in shame. “Fine…deal…but CALL ME!” his blue eyes burned with fury, and his frown I recognized was out of disdain.
“Deal!”
I felt myself rise, stumbling slightly before catching my balance as I felt a hand on my shoulder, “Dude…you don’t have to go!” his voice beckoned.
“I’m sorry…I want to…” came the reply.
I opened the front door and into the cold darkness of the night which I stepped into, feeling the concrete stoop of his front porch beneath my shoed foot as I looked down at my step. My vision changed suddenly, I was no longer there, no longer stepping on the porch but instead a gas pedal found its way beneath me.
I looked up to find I was driving in a car, the iridescent glow of the instrument panel behind the steering wheel glowing brightly.
Suddenly I looked up, beyond the wheel to realize I was careening off the road, the fear and desperation which struck me was so strong! I was scared, and felt vulnerable, I had made a grave mistake and there was no way in my infused mind could I react quick enough.
Over the edge of an embankment I went, no guardrail visible anywhere to keep me from going off into the woods below. The sound of small saplings smashing the hood was loud as I panicked, before I seen a large oak I was heading head long into. Instinctively I jerked the wheel hard, the car sliding sideways as the dark silhouette ominously got closer before all went black…
I stood there in the street once more, as the car with breaks squealing just veered away, the driver reacting quickly to avoid me as I froze in place. I could feel the rush of air as the vehicle whipped past, the brunette woman running as fast as her sweat-pant covered legs could carry her.
“DONOVAN! Oh my GOD!” She reached me at last and scooped me up in a tight hug, “I thought I lost you!” she nearly cried as she said the words. Her embrace was so tight…so warm, so full of love that I began to cry. The shock of what nearly transpired racked my nerves, but this is what broke me – love!
It was then I found myself in my chair being shook awake from Abigale, her firm hand pressing against my shoulder.
“RAY! Wake up!” she said loudly. I gasped awake, my cheeks running cold and wet from tears, my throat sore and dry, my chest heavy and aching.
“What?! What happened?!” I asked her, holding up my hands again to find they were hybrid paws, snapping me back into reality.
“You fell asleep, at first you were sleeping peacefully but then began to whine, your hands and legs began to twitch before you began to convulse. Making weird noises like you were having a seizure!” she explained, giving me a kiss on my forehead.
“I…was dreaming…” I said with a frown as my ears laid back.
“About…what?” she asked puzzled.
“I think…about my childhood…when I was a…boy…” I rubbed my eyes.
“A…boy?”
“Yeah you know…human…” I clarified
“OH! You remember?”
“It seems I have some memories…burned into my subconscious…my childhood, the good and bad and the time of my…accident…” I hung my head.
“Accident?! You mean…!?”
“Yes…what happened to me before…this…” I said with a gesture to my wolf-hybrid body. “I was an idiot!” I smacked my palm hard against my forehead, “I alcohol outlawed as well?” I asked her
“Y-yes…not long after cigarettes…”
“Good!” I sternly replied, but then my heart sank…
“Ray…my one true friend, the one I should have trusted, never got my call…he was trying to help me…if it wasn’t for him, my body would probably never been found…”
“R-Ray? That’s…your name though…Isn’t it?” She asked confused.
“N-No…” I choked back the tears, “I am Donovan…Ray was my friend…his name was burned into my memory so deep I thought I was him…but, I’m not…I wish I could have been…if only I didn’t drink and drive…if only!”
I broke apart this time, tears falling like rain and the flood of emotion overwhelming, I began to whine and wheeze in sorrow, Ray was my only true friend since Childhood…and I let him down...went against his best wishes and best efforts to help me, to keep me safe and do everything in his power to do what’s right…and I was going to fight him over something so STUPID.
Abigale pulled me tight, a sensation so familiar – a mother’s touch; I wept into her chest fur as she rubbed my back and head. It took me a minute to gather myself, sniffling out the emotions as I pulled from her. “Ray…I’m sorry man…please forgive me!”
I looked to the papers on the desk I had filed. Then I looked back at Abigale, the arctic fox raising her brows in empathy.
“I know what I gotta do…” I muttered.
“What?” she asked softly
“I’ve got to make right what happened, I’ve got to…” I said, “Ray is not my real name, but I will keep it in his honor and do great things while it is mine…that, I owe to HIM!”
“I understand…that explains your names then…Ray Donovan…names and memories from your past, except the latter is your REAL name!” she said trying to change the mood and cheer me up.
I nod and turned to collect my paperwork and stuff them into the folder with the large EPTC logo on it. My dream was strong, powerful and reminded me of so much of my past, but it gave me the motivation to make a brighter future.
Terraforming Prora-AE was something I could do to honor my best friend Ray, the man of whom I took the name, a man who stood by me, cared for me when I was a fool. This was my calling, and I never seen it so strongly before now.
ANTHRO was set to disembark the next day as Abigale and I loaded our belongings onto the medical ship. Our mission was to return to earth, to coordinate with the EPTC ship known as the Primrose to help classify and research any organic samples they may discover in their mining and exploratory operations. All the while furthering our own databases and researching our own ways to help in establishing a more prominent diversity of life on Prora after it’s successfully Terraformed.
The final night before departure, Abigale and I spent it together, cuddled up and keeping warm despite the planet’s frigid temperatures. Enjoying one another’s companies in a more personal atmosphere rather than being all business and seriousness towards a common goal.
Despite what transpired in my dreams, she kept silent and refused to talk about them out of respect and love. She knew it troubled me and tried her best to keep me on the right track…much like Ray had done 300 years ago…only this time, I was not going to repeat my mistake!
The next day we left and disembarked aboard the ANTHRO, snapping into hyperspace towards what remained of Earth. The mission to terraform Prora-AE, and my life’s adventure, had just begun.

Absolutely, we can never hide from our subconscious! I still have vivid dreams of my childhood and the neighborhood I use to play in, remembering times of good and I seem to always have nightmares when it comes to driving too, sometimes the breaks fail or something happens, but I always wake up before things turn ugly. Thanks Walt ^^
