Laika: Aged Through Blood - Closure
It's rare that a game hits me well enough that I feel the need to come up with my own sense of closure, but here we fucking are, huh..
This game has run the gamut from making me scream at the desk in rage and frustration over some of the mechanics, to crying like a bitch at the story and how well it's told. And as much as I love the game, it's really a shame I can't recommend it to everyone, because the theme is so heavy and depressing. But if you're not overly susceptible to that, I give this game a top level recommendation.
Just, ah.. You'll probably need a guide for some of it.. It's not very good at telling you where to go :p
9/10 overall, pulled down by gameplay issues.

On the 1000+ wishlist.
Though to be honest I'm kinda turned off on modern game development.
Because of that, a female main character is a yellow flag to me. But i put it on the wishlist for the mechanics.
Is it an endless runner as in you can't stop moving?
Got to go fast, reward platforming, or afore mentioned endless runner?
Does the story act self contained, or does the dev use it as a platform to bash you over the head with a 2x4 of their political ideology? I play games to escape the real world, not to be preached to by people who've never lived it.

It's Trials with a gun, has a very good, self contained story, doesn't care about politics. But it does deal a lot with abuse, loss, trauma, and just trying to live in a world that's doing everything to push you down. It's dark and depressing, but it's not what I'd call "modern game development". Game is pixelart, for starters, and plays a lot on the metroidvania style of old. The devs call it "Motorvania", 'cuz y'know, motorcycle.
If you played and enjoyed Hollow Knight or other such titles, you'll probably enjoy this one as well. Just be mindful that you're spending a lot of time going from A to B and back to A and then to Z and then back to B and then D and maybe stopping by C on the way if you can get up that ledge that you just barely can't reach but you might be able to if you do a perfect shotgun jump.

Well more or less, from what i've seen in modern indie and many AAA games. A female main protagonist, without the player's choice of having one. Is a caution, it could be a good game, but, just about every game with one I've seen* that likes to 2x4 you over the head with their political ideology.
It's always, an anti capitalism rant using made up or already solved issues. Also ironic that they're selling the game. Btw no other system has made it so that even the poorest live a live far better off than any poor person at any other time in history to date. combined with an anti-male screed bordering on pure hate using fake problems and outright lies while real discrimination puts men in prison for life without a trial**. Sprinkled on top some variant of communist or Marxist screed. an ideology that has cost the lives of over 200 million people combined between USSR, china, Cambodia, Vietnam, etc. All from someone who's never either worked a day in a hard physical labor job in their life nor has paid their own bills, possibly up to and including while they get money for their game. Or to be summed up 'muh current day'
*one exception being disco Elysium with a male protagonist. made by devote communists, seriously search for interviews they say as much. The game is coded that you cannot get the canonical ending of the game without helping the communists win in game. You can't even kill the npc like all the others that have his police equipment if you don't want to deal with them. His gun is hard coded in the game to not appear in the communist leader's inventory till after you help his faction beat the others.
** look up how child support courts work. judges are encouraged to set payments based on the possibility of the man earning X income. Say you're a software engineer, just started, you're making 60k a year. Completely legally, they can set payments on the highest end of that job's scale. 200+k a year, and if you say you can't pay it or object, they'll just say 'why aren't you trying to earn that'. if they fail to pay, they get thrown in jail, then taken out of their cell every 6 months and asked to pay up or go back to jail. a defacto life sentence without a trial.

yeah... sure... try telling that to the veteran's who make up roughly 20% of the US' homeless population and hear what they have to say about that...
or try telling that to 53 year old Susan Finley, a Walmart Employee who got pneumonia in May 2016 and was fired because she had taken off one day beyond what is permitted by Walmart’s attendance policy, making her lose her health insurance leaving her unable to go see a doctor because she couldn't pay the medical bills anymore.
Susan Finley was found dead in her apartment 3 months after having been fired by Walmart.
supposedly, 1 in 3 GoFundMe campaigns are made by americans who are trying to pay medical bills.
don't get me wrong, homelessness and high medical bills are issues in other capitalist western countries as well... but nowhere near as extreme, rampant or bad as in the US.
capitalism in the US isn't all its hyped up to be, especially when you start comparing it to other western countries and its really easy for you to get screwed over in the US.
so with that in mind, can you really blame especially US developers for being fed up with this nonsense and voicing critique?
I certainly don't.

sorry, wanted to add this real quick:
currently, 62% of full time working americans are living paycheck to paycheck, making it the most dominant lifestyle in the US. furthermore, 63% of full time working americans do not have the money to pay for a 500$ emergency expense.
is it really a good thing if more than half of a country's working population is struggling to just get by and survive despite working full time?

I'm not crying, you're crying Q3Q
Gawd I'm so glad to see another played this game and can love how wonderful it is too. Aggh <3
One of the hardest games out there story wise that stabs you in the heart practically every single cutscene. And the music? To die for- it accents the feel of the game the entire time. Beicoli really outdid herself with it.
Beautifully done <3 I hope the makers find and frame this one!

In my honest opnion, was a good game with a good idea, but had many lacks (i don't tell here for avoid spoilers and because we aren't on steam)
the only thing i totally dislike was the ending without any form of aftermath , even something like this cool fan art would be appreciated!

Oh yes this games is really good .
The music (I had my 3..4 favorites), the simple but fun mechanics, the story. It really gets you to like the characters and it left an impression for the days after I finished it. Sometimes it shocks you a little, sometimes it makes you feel sad, and in some missions (at the end) you can choose which way you want to resolve it. But all of this is necessary to build the characters, in the end I thought, "omg that's a really good mother".
Really nice fan-art

I had planed to buy the game after trying the demo despite not being the biggest fan of the gameplay when it was still being developed, I just wanted to know more of the story. But I no longer need it thanks to this beautiful big spoiler :P
Its all fine though! After seeing your piece I feared It will be all over again like Puss in Boots movie were bit by bit I get spoilers of everything until it ruins the fun for me, so in an attempt to battle such I simply got to youtube and next 5 hours at x2 speed watched a full playthrough 100% completion.
Yeah, I honestly don't think I would have enjoyed playing the game, but I'm very satisfied to have watched it all. And even more thankful of your great closure! I craved the same need just now and I get to watch it anytime as long as I'm .. here

Definitely one of my favorite games so far. Maybe I just suck, but I have the "Died 1000 times" achievement and I blame the Molerat and Lighthouse Crab boss fights, they were quite frustrating. The bleakness and tragic events may not be for everyone, but I feel it just made the worldbuilding/narrative more believable. History shows that the little guys usually loose, further highlighting Liakas' anger/despair/motivation to keep going.
The end scenes with that song...
Just can't quit listening to it and I've never even played it; the music is quite good. For some reason, the picture of Vix with the bike fox (her mother?) came to mind between your drawing here and having been looking up about a Tale of Tails lore a few days ago.

I love this game and seeing it from someone whose art I love is even better! I don’t usually like a lot of newer games but this one is one of the first in a while that’s made me cry at the end. I’m fully with you in that it’s a must play.
Laika needs more fanart though!!! It seems kinda underground cause I wouldn’t have heard of it if I didn’t find it by this post last month and you can’t really find much on it unless you deliberately look up its name to try and find it.

Thank you so much for this illustration. I have the exact same feeling. I think that the feeling of abrupt loss out of nowhere at the end was probably the point, and I get that it ties in so well with the themes of loss that we the player dont get the closure that the characters are also denied but.... It huuurts.
This makes me feel better.
