I've used blender a bit before, it's a little bit of a learning curve but there's lots of great video tutorials, especially for beginners, and the software itself is intuitive and you can really do a lot with it!

Go with blender. A lot of resources to start and it's free. In freelance, indie, hobby market it's the way to go.

One word of advice. While looking for tutorials try to use ones that are for the newest available version or no further than one before that. The reason for that is Blender changes a lot with each version and You can end up learning stuff that doesn't work anymore and that's discouraging.

Oh! And one more thing- if You get Blender through steam it will update automatically, which is neat and helps You avoid some headache with version management.
