This was my response to a thread on Reddit about how Jackson Hole, Wyoming, is about to collapse.

Do you want to know something that won't appear in any history books, or official accounts, but most probably happened?
In the depths of the Great Depression, the rich conspired with former general Smedley Butler to stage a coup d'etat and take over the country.
It was called The Business Plot.
That part definitely happened, this much we know. But I have a theory as to what came next.
I like to imagine that Roosevelt had a nice, private chat with the organizers of the putsch, and laid out how things were going to happen from that point, going forward.
The wealthy were going to latch their lips to his polio-flaccid penis and agree to every single program and law behind The New Deal.
No questions, no arguments, no hesitation.
They can howl and bark as much as they like in public, but their accountants are going to sign every single check that comes across their ledgers.
If they obey, they turn a ridiculous profit in 20-40 years.
If they don't, then the press will be provided ALL the evidence, he will nationalize the banks and more importantly, the stock exchanges, and mobilize the national guard.
With specific orders to protect the state capitols, and nothing else.
No protection for the banks.
No protection for the stock exchanges.
No protection for the mansions.
No protection for the private properties.
Martha's Vineyard, Mackinac Island, the Hamptons: all will be left to the justice of the common people.
Again, this is pure speculation and nonsense. Never happened, and no way to prove it even if it did.
But I find it very interesting that The New Deal became such a resounding success, with such widespread support, a scant six months after the putsch was exposed.

I find myself greatly angered and frustrated that nobody in the Whitehouse or the Department of Justice is having similar theoretical conversations with the wealthy and powerful. As the Joker said, "What happened? Did your balls drop off? Hm?"

My view as someone living in the US, but born in Germany: The US doesn't have a political left.
The Republican party as it is now is far-right authoritarian.
The Republican party as it was, was nationalist right.
The Democratic party as it is now is center-right.
The "progressive" voices in that party, like Sanders and AOC, are center-left.
They may say they are socialists, but they are anything but. Heard Sanders talk about nationalizing the means of production? Yeah me neither.
So. The choice is between center-right or ultra-far-right. Not very surprising no-one goes after the wealthy.
