Israel launched what it said was a “preemptive strike” on Iran’s nuclear program and other military targets early Friday local time. In a televised address, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the goal of the operation was “to damage Iran’s nuclear infrastructure, its ballistic missile factories and military capabilities.”
“The operation will continue for as long as necessary, until the mission of repelling the existential threat looming over us is accomplished,” he said. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that the United States is not involved in the strikes. “Israel advised us that they believe this action was necessary for its self-defense.”
Explosions were reported early Friday in Tehran, according to Iranian state media, including in areas where many important government offices are located.
