Creativity wasted.

It's sad to see people who think they need to make adjustments or changes to meet the requirements of 'species rules.' it's complete bullshit that people think they have any right to tell people what's okay and not okay in terms of their design, and then to fit into a community or group they need to alter their design to be 'official.' It's arbitrary bullshit.. I've worked quite hard in the protogen community to fight against a lot of this nonsense to make peoples lives easier and to allow creators the freedom to see their oc's in their way, not through some dumbass paywall or other bullshit. Closed and regulated species are a laughable concept and should be fully eradicated from the fandom. I post off and on in twitter using the tag #freethegens as not only a sign for artists and furries to stand up for their creations, but to let everyone know, this shit is not blocked by copyright, respect or another dumbass reason. Your oc is your oc.. no one has the right to take that from you. Although the tag is #freethegens, it applies to any and all closed/regulated species, protogen, primagen, and all others..
and if people honestly think that the zor discord, or the admins running the protogen community care about the community, its time to wake up. they really don't... there's more than enough information to prove that fact.. It's all simple exploitation for monetary gain at the end of the day.. tonight alone I've just seen so many really neat protogen designs completely minimalized to meet their standards.. oh but if you want to use YOUR creation.. it's a 300+ rare auction you gotta win for the privilage of -maybe- having your design accepted.. get lost.. there are way more people out there who will love your OC as an unofficial and give ya the credit you -deserve-.
There is no excuse for this, I have run the concepts through multiple levels of scrutiny and in the end it is all illogical and flawed... closed/regulated species are an excuse to exploit the communities, typically for monetary gain.. I've fought tooth and nail for many people in the fandom to protect their right to design their own characters the way they want, and I don't plan on backing down now

Where is this all coming from?
This is all comming because the community can be aggressively toxic.. to the point where if you break a rule in creation of your character or did not pay for your character to have a trait, you can have people who will harass you and try to get you kicked out of various social communities. Some have even sent death threats and threated legal action (even though they actually can't, but most don't know that.)
It's a mess and a whooooole fuckin thing.. this rabbit hole runs deeper than most wanna even deal with.
But yeah it's dumb to close off a species. Even sue-happy Nintendo doesn't go around suing people creating derivatives of Pokemon characters. Mick39 had Sergals closed in spite of people making their own. To my understanding he came to terms with it and accepted the fact there were people out there appreciating his work enough that others wanted one as an OC. Isn't this what being an artist is about? But honestly this fandom has a control freak issue from what I have observed.
Honestly though I would love for one of these sort to take the matter to court just so they can get a hard dose of reality in the end. This obsession with control is counterproductive to what this fandom represents. Especially if its leading to this... white knighting to the point of policing creativity at the level where death threats are issued for not conforming.
But yea at the end of the day, the fandom is about freedom of creativity.. and putting these regulations behind arbitrary walls and paywalls is just gatekeeping bullshit.. but the white knighting can get very very serious.
I think part of the problem is folks newer to the fandom grew up in an era where the line between fantasy life via the internet and real life was blurred. Oh we had drama back in the day, sure but not this much of it and over such frivolous things. These people have made it so much into a lifestyle that they bring their real life issues with them instead of this just being a something to unwind and enjoy fantasy to get away from the bullshit in reality. Creativity is at the heart of how this works and now suddenly they're paywalling creativity with the same energy as a crony capitalist.
I dipped my toes into that rabbit hole since you brought it up and well, I have kind words for such asinine behavior and blatant assault on creativity while hiding behind the notion of "copyright" to enforce a paywall that micro-charges creativity. It's like... creativity having DLC you must pay for. Like seriously wtf... I could understand the anger if someone were you know...blatantly stealing someone else's OC but it seems we're just talking about people making OCs with their own twists and turns to the original canon design.
If they want to make a business out of this, fine but they really should pay heed to other businesses and how they handle people making OCs of their designs. They don't go attacking them nor do they expect you to pay for some sort of license as it's generally considered good PR for people to be that involved in your IP that they want to have slice for themselves. Seems like though such toxic elements of the fandom have this attitude of being offended on someone else's behalf, most especially on behalf of an artist like they're some sort of untouchable celebrity. At least that's what I've observed over recent years and this seems to be reinforcing that and as such creating undue drama.
It's interesting though cuz I've kinda observed this double standard where it comes to Rule 34 which is technically if it exits, there's porn of it. But somehow people got it in their heads that it's a rule that only applies to commercially owned IPs and are free game to take as you wish such as blatantly making money off off it for example. However, I see it's gone as far as even just wanting a personal OC on a species created by a fandom artist and if you don't abide by every little rule then apparently the guilty party should be ostracized and harassed.
Honestly it's a shame really. The creatives inhibiting the creativity of others through paywalls. Any artist worth their salt would balk at that crap.
It just sucks so much when see 18-21 year olds leaving the fandom over such dumb nonsense.. but they dont know any better. We got people exploiting the fandom all the time and getting away with it.. idk.. theres just so much that can be delved on regarding this.
