In general in the American media, the blame for all this horror is being leveled directly on Putin and his cronies, not the Russian people.

In fact, video of the protests going on in major Russian cities is all over our media and people are in awe of it. We understand how dangerous doing so can be, so we're cheering the protesters on and admiring what they're doing.

Of course, partisan media and politicians are using this situation for their own gains, like they would anywhere else, but even they aren't putting this on anyone but those in charge.
