Situation update from a friend of mine (Russia, outskirts of Moscow)A Friend Of Mine wrote:•I don't see any way to stop the war. As I've said earlier the wars are waged due to economical and political reasons. Russia will go to the end ignoring all sanctions and even NATO interference won't stop this country. Russia will use nuclear weapons if threatened with an invasion.
•There are heavy limitations on what can be said about the situation. Our "Ministry of Truth" deemed all anti-war opinions as act of terrorism. Saying anything out of line means up to 3 years of prison. Giving suggestions for more effective sanctions will result in up to 5 years in prison. Protesting war can result in 15 years in prison.
•Protesting won't be effective. Russian government built on army and economical elite members, there is no democracy in Russia. People don't have a way to change the situation as our government will use lethal force to stop any uprisings. Maybe pilling bodies of thousands protesters in a clash with army can change the situation, but it's not something I could ask for.
•I'd say majority of English speaking citizens do not support the war. However majority of the country do not have access to any information beside what our government provides, neither they want anything challenging their worldview.
•Chance of insurgence is basically zero. Right now it means fighting nearly full force of Russian army with bare hands. However there is a chance for domestic conflict in several next months due to sanctions on economy elite.
•Russia prepares for full scale internet monitoring in the next few weeks. If situation gets any worse, we will be cut off from the rest of the world. In this case I'd expect closed borders and access to global internet shut down very soon.
Peaceful protests will be crushed without clear leadership, and there is none now.
We have articles that criminalize distribution and calls for protests on the Internet, equipment is confiscated and heavy fines are issued, the majority of the civilian population does not have the opportunity to hire a lawyer, and our volunteer organizations cannot cover all detention points.
Now we have the articles you mentioned. For anti-war protests, a person runs the risk of losing 15 years of freedom, the prospects are not very bright, because. the probability of overthrowing the regime is extremely small.
Therefore (in my personal opinion) the best option, unfortunately, remains to support Ukraine from afar, as far as possible. Something absolutely out of the ordinary must happen for literally the whole of Russia to come out to protest, because. even sanctions are unlikely to provoke disorderly people; on the contrary, they are more likely to suppress them, because. people have nothing to live on and eat, instead of protests, people are forced to think about how to feed themselves right now. And because of this, someone takes to flight and leaves.
USA thinks it is stifling war sponsorship (which is partly true), but at the same time it is stifling any anti-war movement because in fact, at least some free people had all their means from working outside our state.
If anything because it was clear for some decades that Putin is just a puppet so maybe the people moving him decide to change puppet?
At this point i have no clue if that could be better or worse. For all i know they could pull out Medvedev again.
