Would anyone mind if I posted something a bit more... "controversial?"
I came very, very close to posting something today. However, I decided against it because it was quite... critical of furries, and the fandom in general. In fact, it was more of a vent piece than anything.
My question is: would anyone mind if I posted something like this? You don't have to like it. You don't have to read it. But I know some people are quite... touchy when people criticize the fandom. Is there anyone here who would look at it go "eww, I hate this guy now!" and never look at me again? If there is, I won't post it, or anything like it.
If not, I promise it won't become a common thing with me, but... it might not be a one-off, either. I'm not one to pretend like this fandom is all hugs and sunshine. But rest assured, I'll always put such stuff in scraps, so you don't have to see it if you don't want to.
Please, be honest.

For example, one thing I particularly dislike is vore. It disturbs me to no end. If I were to really let loose on how I feel about the topic it would probably irritate people and would be difficult to word in a way that would be considered easy to take for those who love it. In the end, it comes down to "what can you handle in terms of response", because choosing to voice your opinion can lead to some aggressive responses. Not saying you shouldn't, but just be prepared if you do.
Funnily enough, your comment "many tend to take direct challenges to topics they feel strongly about as personal attacks (unfortunately)" is not too far off from what I was going to post about. I won't go into the details, but what I was going to post had to do with the general "culture" of the fandom and how it seems to, to put it gently, promote narcissistic behavior. In my opinion, furries are increasingly becoming, and are being encouraged to become, just plain mean, selfish people. It's a very, very deep-rooted issue I have that's been bugging me for a long time. That's all I'll say about it for now.
While not everyone will agree, I do definitely see what you mean. It's a far cry from the welcoming culture I used to know when I first joined the fandom.
To be honest, that was my main concern when I decided not to post my piece. I don't mind people criticizing me, I don't mind people disagreeing with me. But I don't want people demonizing and harassing me. That's exactly the sort of behavior I was criticizing when I wrote it... and I just know that if I post it, sooner or later someone will do just that, because that's just what the fandom does to people, these days. When did we become so petty and cruel?
...I've practically posted the entire thing, at this point, so I guess I might as well put it up. I'd do it later; wait and see if anyone else responds.
Too many would rather indulge is escapism and denial about the issue. It's even worse on sites like u18chan, e6, and especially 4chan which I dare not tread personally but have seen plenty a screenshot from friends.
Sorry I'm late
