While I understand your fear, I don't think Putin would do that. He wants to survive and remain in power. Attacking Poland would achieve the opposite

They like to threaten these things but ultimately its part of Putin regimes long standing habit of hurling vicious threats around to intimidate other countries. Even if more rational people see through them, these kinds of threats do have a psychological impact on decent chunks of the population, which is something Putin is counting on to pull to his favor. You can even observe it here in the United States, with some vocal people (including a handful of politicians) stating something to the effect of "if we stand up to Putin in any way he may start WWIII, OMG!" With this logic then, the only way to "avoid WWIII", is to give Putin whatever he wants.

Literally thats what the nuke/war threats are all about; scaring people into submission or at least, causing some dissension within countries who unfriendly to Putin.

Aside from what others already said: We've seen what is his actual army. 80% Soviet era junk manned by untrained barbarians. It would be highly unlikely that the nuclear forces are significantly better maintained. Probably Soviet era junk as well, half of which wouldn't launch/would fly wherever/explode randomly during flight. Heck, I wouldn't be surprised if a significant chunk of it exists only on paper!

Of course this doesn't mean that it should be ignored but personally I find it reasonable to assume that Putin's ability to wage WW3 is similar to his ability to conquer a country. We can see how it's going.
