Social Media - what are we going to do with it
3 years ago
General
In this world actions seem to recently have become angrier, while the Furry Fandom seems to be trying to claim civility. The rapid development of social media seems to be a major factor.
The Internet as we know it today started around 1994, Facebook started in 2004, Twitter started in 2006, the first smartphone was sold in December 2007, new Artificial Intelligent engines now exist that can create content indistinguishable from human created content. Every single person on this planet, using AI or their own ideas, now has the power to broadcast their thoughts and ideas to the entire planet at almost no cost. In this very short time our species has acquired this new power to influence others. But have we acquired the wisdom needed to safely use this power? And by the way, this genie is not going back into the bottle, we better adjust or evolve to use this new power; or this new power will destroy us.
The Atlantic magazine 14 days ago released a new article with relevant discussion on the subject. It points out the failings of right and left extremists using social media in ways that are destroying our society institutions with current social media. I believe the article is a must read for everyone.

I also believe the largest part of the solution is for each individual to learn to manage their own conformational biases. Yes, I am looking at you TimidGrizzly. If each individual took a day to think about a social media item before re-tweet/like/share the item; if each individuals took a small amount of time to get the whole pictures not just that one tweet or Facebook item before re-tweet/like/share the item; if each individual would ask how this confirms or opposes their own conformational biases before re-tweet/like/share the item; our society would not be so hostile.
Society is the sum of our individual acts each day. I ask myself for each social action/tweet/share/like; what type of world am I adding too by my specific action today. We can be thinkers not manipulated followers; if we choose. The angry society stops when we do not feed it as manipulated followers.
I hope this inspires self reflection.

Aside from FA, I do not and have never participated in Facebook, Twitter, or anything else. Perhaps this has cut me off from some things, but in the long run I believe it may be for the best. Peace of mind is difficult to find as it is!
In this time of world craziness, peace truly is hard to find.
