I think most people are generally afraid of fire. When I first joined I only was going to help with paperwork and simple tasks outside on a fire scene like traffic control or getting tools for the firefighter going inside the burning building. Once I started learning I fell in love with it.
Going inside a burning building is very different then TV and movies. For example, most times you are not going to be able to see. The room is full of smoke and you try looking for a glow to find the fire. Most of the time you are crawling on the ground due to heat and smoke.
It can be a rewarding job and also a heartbreaking one. You have to come to terms that you are not going to be able to save everyone. Some days the only thing that's going to get you through is your family of fellow firefighters. Firefighters are very close with those in their department. They are your brothers and sisters. You all will become close because when you go into a burning building together you are putting your life in their hands and vise versa. You need to really trust your team.
If anyone is ever interested please go check out your local volunteer department. Like I mentioned a little before you don't have to be the one running into a burning building. A department is made up of many different jobs. Like driver/ pump operator, traffic control, directors, secretary, people who do paperwork, and so much more.
Thank you for your question. Sorry if I went overboard with a response I truly love being a firefighter and get a little excited when people ask about it. I hope I answered your question. If not just let me know and I can try to be more specific. Or if you have any other questions I'll be more then happy to answer. <3 <3 <3
