Survived Westercon
Tonopah Nevada is a little former silver mining town half way between Reno and Vegas, about 6200 feet above sea level. It is also just up the hill and aways from the Tonopah proving grounds, home to bombs and rockets and stuff since at least WWII. And the site of Westercon. This year it was tiny, not even 200 bodies showed up. Not great for sales, but gave me plenty of time to chat up the occasional fan. Nice old hotels too. The drive in was largely uneventful, except for the crickets. Big crickets, like 2 inch/50mm long buggers, millions and maybe billions for several mile stretches of the highway. But getting to Tonopah was only half the trip, as I was also taking my Nephew to the Rainbow Gathering in Colorado. Which took as long to get to as it was to get from Seattle to Tonopah. Argh. But I survived, though each leg was about 16 hours of driving, mostly on little two lane state roads. Sales for the con were not worth noting. Mostly old back stock from decades past. After the last few years, doing/going anything was better than nothing, and it was nice to see more of the countryside and meet a few new people.
The Mormon cricket (Anabrus simplex) is a well-known wingless species of shield-backed katydid in North America.
that can get up to 3" in length.
It's not going to stop me though; life is short and I can't waste it on being afraid.
PS: There are a few shout-outs to you and Albedo in my story.
...and if YOU Were there, I'd have been happy to try to show up since it's not horribly far away now.
Okay... ssoooooo.... go back, and IMAGINE I was there, because I WOULD HAVE been if I knew about it.DEF need to get back into cons, if just for my own sanity.
