That was a very interesting and thorough analysis. I was always a fan of Carl Sagan's Cosmos, so this film had a special place in my heart, especially as it was released in cinema months after his death. I was also fortunate enough to meet Dr. Jill Tarter, former director of SETI, upon whom Carl based the character Eleanor Arroway.

It's telling that even after repeated viewings, I had missed some appearances of the pattern (the scattering of popcorn). The historical basis for Elmer was also very interesting. I like your interpretation of Eleanor's voyage as one inward, as alluded by the film's iconic opening and the mirror cut of the medicine cabinet scene.
