I mean, the way I see it, a rough animation is planning to become a full-fledged animation later on would be called a "storyboard". However, if an animator leaves a rough animation the way it is, it would be called an "animatic". That's just my theory, I'm not entirely sure if it's accurate.

To me, a storyboard is a series of still images shown in sequence on their own with notes written on/around the images. An animatic would be those images, minus the notes, put in sequence in a video format and timed out to be in sync with dubbed over placeholder audio. A "rough animation" is, in my opinion, an actual animation consisting of at least 6 frames per second, with the frames being more sketchy than a finished product, but with the intention of being cleaned up later. I personally feel that referring to storyboards and/or animatics as "rough animations" is just dumb and pedantic.

Feels like this is kinda grumbling over symantics for a definition. Call them what you want to call them.

The director was doing thumbnails
The storyboarders were laying out rough animation
The animators were doing cleanup-

Terminology is all kinds of screwed up.
