Depends upon the mecha design, but generally yes. I also like them when they're coaxial to the arm/hand (forearm housing, external forearm mount, etc.), and when hand-carried. For the semi-rare full-arm designs (some Macross designs, etc), then it's a definite yes, as well as arms replaced with missile/rocket pods (because a Macross Missile Massacre is a thing of deific and sublime beauty, yes it is).
I'm quite the fan of the more "scientific mecha" as the term goes. Give me something which makes some basic engineering sense where possible. To this day I adore designs like Patlabor, the early Universal Century Gundams prior to transformables showing up on the scene, and, even though there are transformables, early Macross (Macross Zero, Macross (the original series and movie), and Macross Plus). On the more realistic side (if such a term can ever REALLY be applied to mecha) the Japanese illustrations for classic Battletech mechs.
