Rant - The DA AI and Twitter Dramas
Another day, another bit of a drama where people are going to quit a website “4 evar!”. In this post, I’m going to cover the drama individually, and address the general topic of jumping ship.
-DA AI-
The drama - Deviant Art has announced a new art AI (called Dream AI). This means all art will be used to make AI art.
DA has said their AI won’t trawl their users' art for AI generation. For the sake of argument, let’s take DAs word on this.
ANY art posted ANYWHERE PUBLIC will be scraped by AI art bots. This is a simple fact of posting anything on the internet. Jumping to Twitter or Tumblr or Instagram or FA won’t make your art immune. Your options are to not post art on the internet, or accept that it will be scraped by AI.
UPDATE- They made opt out the default. Let's see if that calms the drama (I doubt it).
-Twitter-
The drama - Twitter has been bought by Elon Musk. So now artists want to jump ship.
There are two aspects to this, and neither make sense.
First is the hatred of Elon Musk himself. So far, no one can point to a specific thing he’s done. Just vague insults that don’t hold water. For example, I’ve seen him described as “king of the incels”, even though he’s been married and had children.
Second is the changes he’s making to Twitter. Like wanting to remove the “lords and peasants” system of blue checkmarks, removing the algorithms that push certain political causes, and removing bot accounts. I don’t see the problem with any of this and have yet to hear a compelling reason to have a problem with it.
-Jumping Ship-
Finally, there’s the idea that jumping ship is the solution. As with the various dramas around FA, DA, and Patreon, people are hesitant to move on. In my opinion, these current dramas don’t even compare to previous dramas these sites had in the past, and so the best thing to do would be to wait and see.
If you insist on jumping ship however, here’s my take. In 2020 I made a post trying to find a viable alternative art site. The two best candidates were Weasyl and Newgrounds. Weasyl was ignored because no one uses Weasyl. Newgrounds was ignored because reasons. If you want to post places that aren’t DA, those are two options I know of, but that was years ago. Again, these sites won’t save you from AI. If you feel strongly about it, nuke and never post again is the only viable option.
As for social media. I don’t use Twitter so I can’t really say. The names I hear a lot are Telegram, Mastodon, and Fediverse. I don’t know what any of those are though and so can’t recommend them.

FA+

As for the AI sthick on DA. I guess we'll just see what happens from this point on. Don't even know why DA even wanted to do this in the first place.
