The size limit i'm seeing is 6000x6000

That’s subscription only.

There are three limits.

Max 10MB, max 6000px on either dimension, and max 2560x1440 (3686400px) total pixel count.

Hitting any of those three (the last in particular is very easy to hit) will make FA downscale and compress your image.

The FA+ limits aren’t even that much higher.

Its confusing, but its done by megapixels, with a max X and max Y.

Non FA+ users are limited to 3.7 megapixels, or ~1923x1923 for a square image.
FA+ users are limited to 8.3 megapixels or ~2800x2800 for a square image.

As e621 does have a better tag system than FA. That proves this site is way behind what they could currently be doing.

They focus on cosmetics as opposed to actual website security, better blocking system, and better tagging systems.

All that takes money and time, largely because of the ancient code the site is running on. That's all stuff that they're working on.

On the plus side, the lazy artists will have their stuff resized like 700 pixels larger. On the minus size, we don't even have the option of putting up full size anymore, or avoiding FA's nasty compression if they didn't bother making that any better. Even the supposed paid "upgrade" only bumps it from x1440 to x2160. If my math checks out, then even if you paid for the upload size upgrade, you'd get just under 3000x3000 max on that same image.

You can avoid FA's compression entirely by resizing the image to fit the spec beforehand, and using your own compression.

All this interface reworking and they still haven't done anything to make comment sections readable. Feels less readable now if anything.

Clicking my FA icon in the top right just brings me to a dropdown menu now instead of taking me to my page and hiding the FA banner through my adblocker screws up the page layout some now because they're using negative margins to format stuff around it. 5 minutes of looking at the new version and I keep finding stuff it makes worse.

Yeah I ain't a fan of this change either. Also bugged me when I can't click my icon and be taken to my profile like before. Why the downgrade, FA? C'mon.

I'm hoping the feedback is strong enough to have them reverse the changes.

People have been spoiled by super-massive websites that offset the cost of file hosting by selling all of your data to advertisers. I'm surprised it took this long!

Tbh this. Data is extremely costly to store nowadays despite cheapening storage costs (energy cost is still high though) and large pics add up when you get literally thousands to tens of thousands of uploads a day easily. Ads are one way to help fund a site since, well, it ain't a charity. Subscription models are another way which is what FA has done. Could've been adjusted a bit perhaps yea but not many other options other than selling your data which....surprisingly very few people care about. A little scary.

Very good point, glad it was made. FA isn't some public company making billions, and regardless of the decisions they make you still have to be able to afford hosting all this data, so yeah I'm surprised it didn't take longer too.

The funny thing is that I wouldnt be surprised if it won't save FA. The site had a tubulant filled past that shows the incompetent nature of the staffs. Not much people are going to pay FA unless they are a serious artist who live off of commissions. I feel like that's the top 5% earners. The active user base of the site is small too maybe a few 100,000s? It may help the poorly ran site for awhile but the increasing uploads alone will still pile up. If youtube charing people for 4k isn't going to help much for google then FA charing more isn't going to help much either in my guesses.
It'll just stain the site's already battered reputation. I feel like it'll just agitate people and might motivate some people to move. I've heard complaints for from the few years I've been on this site about mismanagement and technical issues and I sense peeps are slowly getting more and more annoyed. People are staying here only for the user base count does not give the site a royal userbase. That'll stick around if the site gets more of a bore for them. This also could be the slow start of the collapse of the site like a micro twitter fiasco the competing sites have superior features and the many better fandom alternatives are established enough that an exodus is easily possible. (Itaku, Furry network, weasyl, etc.)

I don't feel it. The site's most popular furry has 93k only. It gotta be less than 1 million or only slightly more than 1mil. XD

It makes me wonder too. I wouldn't mind seeing the data backing up that claim. It must be somewhere. Hard to say for sure without that.

Someone's follower count isn't really a way to gauge the total number of members, though. It's a pretty vague indicator at best.

Fa is an absolute tore fire when it comes to making meaningful changes.

I mean uploading large images through re-uploads was just a bug that went unfixed for years. Now it's been fixed.

someone should make a extension or something that make so you can by pass it and upload it to there full size without limitasions

Very unfortunate, but I geuss its not the end of the world, especially for artists that effectively make money through FA, and at 4x4, are the ones using up a decent chunk of site resources

It's a damned if you do damned if you don't situation. Websites are not cheap, especially when they are data storage/ have large bandwidth. Fa is by no means a highly popular website in the grand scheme, but as a small site it is massive. They were running on donations for the longest time, which when they were a much smaller site and this stuff was cheaper worked. Now that won't work. So they had a few options, sell data, charge subscriptions, or hope people magically donated more money. This is the lesser evil. People complain constantly that their free site doesn't have any of the features they want or that it's run poorly when it's been being funded on small fluctuating budget for 15+ years. It's also a small price tbh.

People don't seem to realize that every improvement takes time and money. Every one of the things that people have complained about here is something that they're working on. Considering their limited resources, they're doing pretty well.

I wouldn't really call it greed. Not everything needs to be so massive in pixel count. Unless it's something that's got a lil something to look at in every nook and cranny I cannot fathom why a image would need to be so large like 6k
I'm less concerned about the size though as much as I am about the amount of data per image. I rarely go above 2200 pixels on height or width but I try to upload in png when I can. I don't wanna have to start torturing my art with jpegs just to meet the filesize limit.
