Yesss. They have an ecosystem where they provide hardware, software, etc which is locked in tightly. Can't legally run OS X on a non-Mac. Can't practically run OS X software on non-OS X. So as soon as you buy any Mac software, you've just limited your future computer choices to a Mac, a Mac or a Mac, unless you want to throw away the software you bought.

I have a friend who fixes/programs comps for a living. He's the one who told me that macs are like that. The one I used in high school was great, but I only used it for Photoshop and internet surfing, so it's not like I'm experienced. PCs have always worked fine for me, with few exceptions.

I'm not even approaching the issue of how well they work, just the one of how competitive they are. There's a reason we haven't adopted full-on communism: competition leads to great advancements in technology.

Not to stir up anything, but just from that single post, how can you be certain that that user was a Mac user? >.> As a Linux user, myself, I visit Mac and MS related sites like that occasionally and even make posts sometimes even though I don't use and am not interest in using any of their products. Even you, a non-Mac user, had to have gone there to find that post. Mac-users aren't the only folks that visit that website, y'know. :P

Of course, if that was a Mac-user, then yeah, I'd find that hilarious, but just from that single post, I would find hard to deduce, even though it is a Mac-related site, that he or she is a Mac user. >.>

True, but that person didn't just visit the forum--they made an account, and were commenting to some degree. It could be an anti-Mac troll, but the stuff I mentioned before and generalizing VC-1 as being "a proprietary MS solution" sounds like standard ignorant Apple loving to me :p

Apple's been doing the Big, Bad, Proprietary Vendor thing for ages. They're vicious, and they're pretty good at it. The only real difference between them and Microsoft is that each targets somewhat different market segments, and has adjusted tactics to match. (I must admit, though, that the vertical integration approach does tend to produce a product that fits together well; that those willing to pay will get something that feels nice and is generally of good quality. This is why Apple ceases to be a minority player when you just look at the high-end market. Of course, being skilled in business does not, by any means, imply that you are any nicer to people than necessary--especially in a smaller market with higher profit margins.)

The way I see it, Microsoft and Apple are both vying for operating system monopolies, and (spurred on by Apple) some personal media player stuff, while Apple seeks monopolies on media distribution, smart phones, home theater/computer integration, aaaand computer hardware.

VC-1 is as open as H.264 though, since they're both standards (and both require RAND licensing for the patents to the MPEG LA). VC-1 is an SMPTE standard and H.264 is an ITU-T standard.
Both are a lot more open than any of Apple's products. :p
