Yet another wave of 🇷🇺 missiles (Dnipro tragedy)
Yesterday (Saturday, January 14th) the Russian🇷🇺 military launched yet another large-scale missile attack against Ukraine🇺🇦, the first such mass missile attack since around New Year's eve/day but part of a Russian military campaign against Ukrainian infrastructure that started back on October 10. Some of the missiles used were apparently old Soviet-era Kh-22 supersonic anti-ship missiles whose speed can evade Ukraine's missile defenses but are not designed for attacking cities (instead of ships on the open ocean) and are very inaccurate for hitting specific buildings in a city, leading to another tragedy similar to the tragedy in a shopping mall in Kremenchuk, Ukraine🇺🇦 on 27 June 2022 but this time hitting an occupied apartment building in the large city of Dnipro, Ukraine🇺🇦. About 1,700 people lived in the nine-story building and the total number of casualties was not clear in the initial reports because the middle half of the apartment building collapsed, but by 17 January there are 45 dead including six children,15 of the bodies are still unidentified, at least 79 people are wounded including 14 children, and 20 were still missing and possibly buried under the debris/rubble. Rescuers have removed 8,500 metric tons of debris from the site. The Dnipro apartment attack has orphaned 5 children. It was the deadliest single attack on Ukrainian civilians since summer 2022, according to The Associated Press-Frontline War Crimes Watch project, although over 7,000 civilians have been killed in Ukraine since Russia invaded in February 2022, according to the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (and those are just the well documented deaths, the actual toll is likely far higher). Repeated attacks with inaccurate anti-ship missiles in urban areas seem deliberately cruel rather than just careless, inept, or indifferent to civilian casualties.
This wave of Russian missiles created more blackouts all across Ukraine, so the following Journal is still very relevant:
https://www.furaffinity.net/journal/10407727/ -- Help Ukrainians🇺🇦 living without electricity⚡
Here is the rather cold and factual news report in the ISW Russian Offensive Campaign Assessment for January 14, 2023:
Russian forces launched two waves of missile strikes targeting Ukrainian critical infrastructure on January 14. Ukrainian officials reported that Russian forces conducted 50 missile and three airstrikes against Kyiv, Kharkiv, Odesa, Kryvyi Rih, Dnipro, Vinnytsya, and unspecified settlements in western Ukraine.[1] Russian missile strikes on Dnipro City damaged an apartment building, killing at least 5 people and wounding over 60.[2] The Ukrainian General Staff reported that Russian forces struck Ukrainian cities and settlements in two waves: first employing S-300 and S-400 systems in Belarus against ground targets in Kyiv and Kyiv Oblast in the morning and later launching 28 cruise missile strikes using Kh-101/Kh-555, Kh-22, sea-based Kalibr, and Kh-59 guided air missiles.[3] The Ukrainian General Staff added that Ukrainian forces shot down 18 cruise missiles and three guided air missiles.
Here is the mention/update from the January 15 ISW report:
• Ukrainian officials specified that a Russian Kh-22 missile struck a residential building in Dnipro City on January 14, killing at least 25–30 civilians.[29] Ukrainian officials clarified inaccurate reporting that Ukrainian air defenses may have caused the destruction to the building, noting that Ukraine does not have the capability to shoot down Kh-22 missiles.
Here is the Russian government's side of the story:
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the Russian military doesn’t target residential buildings and suggested the Dnipro building was hit as a result of Ukrainian air defense actions.

Well, I can finally sit down and write down what happened.
On January 14, 2023, my city was attacked by a Russian X-22 missile. Entering a residential building. In a house where there were a lot of people, where people celebrated a holiday or just rested on their day off. I heard it. I saw. I was there. I will not forgive.
As soon as the explosion sounded, I called an ambulance and said what I saw, because it could be said for sure that the rocket hit a place where there was nothing but ordinary residential buildings.
I went to that house to find out what was there and how. Help, maybe.
When I arrived, I did not expect to see THIS. There is a hole in the house and there are no two entrances.
There was just chaos, a bunch of people under the rubble, from which cries for help can be heard. It was heard how people tried to shout to their relatives, but there was no answer. Jackets, children's toys, furniture were scattered.
I approached and asked what I could do with one of the rescuers. I was asked to calm the old people and stay with them if they feel bad. I saw how a man with a completely bloodied back was pulled out from under the rubble. I saw severed body parts. A couple of women and one child, who were taken away in a serious condition.
I stood with one grandfather, who didn’t get so hard and he was waiting for his wife to be found. I don’t know how I should have remained cool and with a sober head when grandfather stood in front of me, who caught the Second World War and now stands with a bloodied hand, worrying about his wife. Thankfully, she was found. She miraculously survived. When the old people felt a little better and their relatives took them, I asked if they needed something else. But due to the fact that I did not have a medical education, my maximum was just to buy water and leave, so as not to create unnecessary chaos and crowds. I bought water for 0.5 (how much I had in my pocket - I spent so much) and went home so as not to interfere with the professionals.
A couple of times I came again, but there were already hundreds of people who helped and waited for instructions.
At the moment, 76 wounded and 14 killed are known.
After that, do you still think about loyalty to Russia and their people? Look at the photos from my city, from all over Ukraine.
I apologize in advance for my English, I translate something with the help of a translator, because it is very difficult to think soberly in such a situation.

Although the tragedy in Dnipro has gotten the most attention, other cities like Kyiv, Zaporizhzhia and Nikopol have been hit with missiles or rockets, and the Russian-controlled regions have reported problems of their own (for example, see this news article about Donetsk).

Awful thing that more than 44 innocent people died. And other people lives was ruined in a second.
