Hey folks!
As I'm sure many of you are all too aware, the cost of living has been rising at a pretty dramatic rate in the past year, in a lot of places around the world, including here where I live in the UK. Over the last few years I've taken a look at my budget each year and decided that while my costs were rising slowly I was still making enough from my work (and living on a budget I strive to keep as low as possible in more general terms) that I didn't want to raise my prices at a time when I know that the clients I work with will also be seeing a lot of their other expenses rise, both in terms of essentials and luxury spending.
Unfortunately, in April this year the UK government has decided to end its universal support for household fuel bills (despite my low income I don't claim any of the government benefits which would make me eligible for the new support package), and on top of that to allow the price-cap for an average household's power supply to rise by £500 (from £2500 per year per average household to £3000). While I live in a small home and am exceptionally stingy with my own heating even in the midst of winter, this extra cost on top of continued rising prices for food, clothing and other necessities has meant that I can't afford to sustain my current pricing without having to take on several extra days work a month, which effectively means giving myself entire weeks without days off (I've already been doing this a fair bit over the last year, working 6 day weeks or sometimes not having a day off for a couple of weeks in a row).
So, beginning on the 1st of May 2023 (delaying it a couple of months to give y'all good notice of the impending change), I will be raising the price of my story commissions by the amounts listed below. I hope the increase in costs is limited enough that it doesn't totally push me out of the price range that many of you have come to expect over the last few years, but I do understand that this might cause issues for some. If that's the case I sincerely apologise, but I hope you can understand that this isn't done to make myself more profit, just to maintain my current situation and avoid any risk of financial distress or overworking burn-out as my basic living costs continue to rise.
Below are my current prices (all in £, GBP) , and what they're going to change to as of May 1st 2023:
- "Three Word Prompt" short story commission -
Current price: £15.
New price: £20.
Change: £5.
- 2000 word short story commission -
Current price: £30.
New price: £35.
Change: £5.
- 4000 word mid-length story commission -
Current price: £60.
New price: £70.
Change: £10.
- 6000-8000+ full-length story commission -
Current price: £110.
New price: £125.
Change: £15.
My Patreon prices will remain unchanged as they've always been charged in dollars, and due to the falling value of the pound (£GBP) against the dollar ($USD) in the last six months or so their current values when converted to GBP are actually more in line with my new pricing, so to raise/change prices there would be both unfair to current patrons, and frankly unnecessary at this time.
Also, a reminder that these prices are only rising from May 1st onward. So anyone who currently has a commission in the works from me, or has discussed getting one from me prior to May doesn't need to worry about these changes. :)
Thank you all so much for your kind support over the years since I started writing full time. It's genuinely a pleasure to get to write stories for you and share them for others to enjoy. I hope I can continue doing so for a long, long time to come, and that things stabilise around the world to the extent that I don't need to raise my prices again for many more years.

It's all good! I know sometimes life gets in the way of plans, and I do understand that getting a furry story commission is very much a luxury expense. :)

That's that inflation, man...I honestly don't know how the world is going to recover from the pandemic, if it ever does.

Indeed, though in the UK specifically the power cost crisis has a lot more to do with the war in Ukraine and the overall European reliance on Russian gas (pushing the prices up now that people are rightly looking for sources elsewhere) than the pandemic.
