Given my experience playing MMORPGs like Guild Wars 2 and RuneScape, I can say with full confidence that, yes, they're desperate for attention...ANY attention...because they are insecure, plain and simple: they just like to pretend like they aren't. Just spend any amount of time in any game with a competitive mode like PvP and you immediately get what I mean: people hunting for digital prizes that translate to zero real-world value with such zeal and grit that they poison the water-hole, as it were.
