Have you ever done this?

It's very easy to put yourself in a dark place without meaning to. Like you have a thought that pops into your head and it just snowballs from there. Just a while ago I was thinking of a story idea about a man who loses not only his wife, but his unborn child. He becomes angry in his grief. Not just because his wife died, but he never gets to hold his son, or watch his son grow up to be a man. His son never gets to experience life....
Before I knew it I was on the verge of tears.
I suddenly realized what was happening and I had to snap myself out of it. That's never happened to me before. I've had emotional response from other people's stories but I've never had that kind of a response from something I've thought up on my own. I don't even know what brought it about.
Has this ever happened to any of you?

Once or twice. It happens when you make yourself feel what the main character is feeling. You become so connected with them that you feel or almost feel their exact pain and suffering.
