Depends on the context. I know there's one fur out there (forgot the name, but wouldn't list it if I did, to save him headaches) that I didn't like the commissions he got from Rthur, because he would always have to insert himself into a dominant, almost forceful master-like role in what would otherwise be pretty nice Rule 34 pics. So, in that kind of context, yeah, it does bother me, some.

It's very situational and care must be given to not over-do it. It's the same with any type of artist endeavor, including comics and writing. I'm writing a sequel novel with my self-insert character in it (Vox) but I have to keep questioning "Do I really need Vox in this role or can I use one of the other characters which would be more fitting?"

For a scene I'm writing up now, I initially went with Vox, but now I'm using Throng's transport guy, Hauler. I'll write up Vox having a therapy session instead.

Honestly, my biggest canon-warping crossover was Mewtwo & Carmelita, which involved none of my OC's at all. That pairing made no sense, but at least no one had to blame my sona for it. XD

As someone who's drawn it and commissioned it, the crossover doesn't matter as much as do I find the sona involved appealing or not, or like the attitude the character has, I guess.

The only time it's weird is when they're self-inserting themselves into the backgrounds of every commission they do.

There are a couple artists who do the OC thing, but they keep pushing things like "only MY dick is big enough to please [character]" or "only MY seed can impregnate [character]" or "I can completely break this character who should rightly be able to castrate me but lol I made her my bitch".

That stuff never sat well with me.

I've run into some stuff like that here, and for me it's irksome when it's also tied into some pretty flagrant cuckolding; like somehow the OC's dick is just so goddamn good it makes the other party just jump ship with a middle finger extended out to the previous partner. It doesn't make me feel very comfortable, but when I see it I just move on; it's one thing to dislike a fetish or kink but it's a whole different kettle of fish when you confront someone about it and try to "persuade" them out of it. It may not be my thing but I'm not about to go directly kinkshaming someone over it either...

Eh... it depends. A lot of the time I find it a bit distracting (especially because the character isn't an "everyman", they're an "Overpowered Self-Insert"), but there are also several instances where I'm totally okay with it. I guess it depends on whether I like the artist/commissioner and their character and/or work already. Like, I'm totally fine when you do it, and I'm cool when a few of the artists I follow do it; but there are some moments where I see an artist draw that and I just think "Hm... I'm not feeling it".

Self-Inserting is extremely common in any amateurish or community driven artist circles so it's very normal. I echo the sentiment of others regarding that it depends a lot on how the character is portrayed.

Personally, I'm ultra-guilty of doing what you described so I can't judge other people much unless they are very imposing, inflexible or are plain obnoxious with everybody else.
In my case, the justification I use is that I'm an envious mo'fo and the niche genres of smut I like mostly feature females as subs (though that has improved along the years since I got into drawing an contributing). While I still like those, I wished there was more futanari/bdsm/tentacle stuff on male subs so I started contributing to it and satisfying my fetishes at the same time. But I created a setting, story and lore to go along with it cuz I didn't want things to be meaningless like much of my older stuff. I have many other persona OCs for different settings that I don't use or create variants of characters I already created (not necessarily personal). However I mostly do it as some sort of fun "cosplay" thing.

90% of my gallery was smut of my fursona as most people in this fandom create a fursona and go around trying to get sexy art with them and RP, so I went along with it when I first entered this site. In time, I created other characters, but I couldn't really find much point for them and couldn't create a story around them to my satisfaction. So I abandoned it and started something with more focus within the niche genres I like, tossed the OC into the situation and developed it from there. Now that human OC was tailor-made for the genres and the characters would also follow a theme. The problem is that I liked the dynamic of the OC with a specific character so much that ended up branching the setting into 2, being forced to resort to the "multiverse/alternate-timeline" bullcrap to keep developing both scenarios. One being about a loving monogamous relationship between the OC and his futanari girlfriend and the other being pretty much a scifi bdsm harem comedy where the OC is in over his head and gets himself into over-the-top sexual situations with many characters though not in a relationship with any of them (though each character he interacts with has a different dynamic).

I mostly draw stuff for myself for fun and as an outlet, but I wouldn't want to do a blatant self-insert into anything I'd see as SERIOUS work for mainstream audiences. I'm a niche guy doing niche stuff to satisfy my niche tastes. However, I'm glad that people grew to like the character, the characters he interacts with, his predicaments and the setting I created to allow them to happen or else I wouldn't continue to post them. I got a few fanart of the character and I don't see it as "Oh! They're drawing ME! They love ME!" as I prefer to see it as "Yay! I'm doing something right portraying a character that people are digging".
I mean, I've drawn other people's OCs for commissions, trades and gifts, allowed my characters to be drawn in non-canon situations by other people (I drew some too)... I don't mind.

Well if the arts is good and it is all in context then I don't mind at all. I guess I am more forgiving if it is like an artist's character than their actual sona as it were, gives that distance where you can ignore if the guy making it was jerking it to himself in a roundabout way.

Actually thinking about it, I don't know who would I draw when I want to self insert a sona, I guess my Celebi but he is more my artist side than my actual sona I feel now.

I do find it a bit off putting when it is a commissioner that goes on a spree and suddenly has their sona everywhere, especially as a Pokemon connoisseur when someone goes on a spree with an uncommon Pokemon and they dominate things for a good while but I don't think that is part of the topic and you can say I am salty and jelly.

If you have developed the talent to draw or write your fursona into a piece, then do as you please. You owe nobody any reason to draw/write as you see fit.

The only time I might find it distasteful -- even with a sexy sona -- is when the sona doesn't fit the universe... like a hyper-muscular husky OC being put into the Mushroom Kingdom to bang Luigi, or something.

I mean I've been guilty of doing some of this myself, though I do try to secure permission to do so where possible in the cases where it's my character with another artist's character or a friend's character; with Rule 34 it's a bit more loosey-goosey of course. I do try to make sure it's also not ALL I draw either, as doing too much self-insert sex stuff can make it seem very...what's the word, what's the word...gah, braaaaain

Depends on the artist and how its done. I've seen somewhere it works well with the piece and others which are blatant self gratifying things. I know there was an artist many years ago and you couldn't get a pic of just your character, you'd get your character interacting with one of theirs which I know annoyed several folks.

Porn is to be enjoyed and indulged in. This is just another way to indulge in fantasy. I think its fun really!

If an artist is doing a personal piece, I don't find it any more offensive than somebody commissioning their sona in the same situation. I've commissioned plenty of pics with my sona and a fictional character. I can't fault an artist for drawing themselves something that I'd commission them for if I were inclined to.

I'm a little guilty of commissioning that sort of thing myself. Mostly I try to keep such things light and fun.
I'm not too put off by others doing it, as long as it isn't really jarring and the sona works with the characters they interact with.

It's mostly contextual for me. I find it less notable the more humble, subtle, or discreet they are. Like, once in a while boning of Lola Bunny or Krystal, and it's just a funny joke the audience is invited to enjoy, it barely makes it worth noticing. If they're obnoxiously intentionally confronting the audience with screamingly over the top "I might be insecure or too young to be drawing this" self-assuring big parts going at the flavor of the day with long screeds taunting the audience or yelling to loud about how they don't care about anything like they're store brand diet Marina Abramowitz, then it becomes notable. Because subtlety and laughing, welcoming gentleness let's audiences ease their way down, accepting and suspending disbelief, being friendly. But door to the face confrontation raises hackles, makes people less charitable, they forgive less and point out more nits. They don't suspend disbelief but confront and dissect it because, implicitly, the artist invited them in like a vampire by being so confrontation, strident and contrary. They look more desperate, pathetic, and weak because the unkindness comes across as performative.

I will admit there is a part of me that kneejerks when seeing it when done with canon characters, like "Why can't this have been with someone I actually care about!" But in my rational mind I remind myself that I shouldn't be so selfish. Like if you had a chance to fuck Rouge the Bat, would you not seize that opportunity? I can't blame any self-respecting dude for indulging in her in such a moment. Heck, I'd slap them if they didn't!

Sort of the same with commissioning work, the idea being that you're paying someone else to make the fantasy art piece you yourself want. Showing it off to people functioning as a form of exhibitionist theater in the form of a fantasy given a visual.

The whole reason I have a fursona/persona/whatever is so I can do exactly that. I'm not gonna like, fault someone else for that. Plus I don't usually go with 'I want to be in this specific situation' mentally, mine is more like 'These characters are hot, I want to do a thing with them'.

It bothered me when an artist would, for years, avoid being a part of the scenery of the kinks. Then within a year there's a sudden turn and this artist keeps involving the fursona in all the kink art that used to be exclusive domain of commissions or personal OCs. It makes me think, "I thought it bothered you if people stare at you, what changed?" Takes me out of it all the time when i know I'm looking at the artist being uncomfortable in the picture.

honestly? i think it's awesome to see people draw content or get stuff that they're super into, and it doesn't really get more self fulfilling than stuff like this, so i dig it!!! people gotta treat themselves more :p

Context always matters in these sort of things... so yeah.

As long as I find the Sona pleasing or nice to look at, I'm happy to see them in a piece with others. I'm not really bothered even if it is a character I don't find appealing, as I'll just move on and look at something else, but I have no problem with artists doing this. A lot of times, actually, when I commission an artist I'll ask them if they'd like to include one of their characters in the piece.

If the fursona is sexy, I don't mind. Though it can be a little boring for me if the character's not very versatile (always topping, doggy style). I've unwatched a few in the past for that, because it's just boring!

The only other thing, more specifically, is if the character has a Mary Sue façade. Not the 'sex is always great' kind, but when they make out their character is always sooo amazing... The word 'vapid' comes to mind.
Hands up, I'm a little guilty of this, but it is to fulfil a purpose, and he's not technically my fursona. ^^;

And let's be honest, even if their character wasn't in it, it's still custom-designed. :P

I think it depends on how well it's done. Like someone else here said, if the self-insert has the personality of wet bread yet gets all the mates, that's not acceptable. In my case, my sona Taketzu is his own complete character in my lore. He's got his own story. Thouuugh because I love him so much, he does get a bit of favouritism treatment :3

imo self-inserts are cringe everywhere else except flr games with character creators and hentai art. Primarily because you're following an artist, not just an art style.

With OCs its a all good as long as the two parties involved are into it, really thats something for those two people to be concerned with and no one else.
Official chars i'm a bit eh on the self insert thing but i do understand it and why folks do it, like yeah i wanna bang rouge the bat and its damn tempting to draw it. But that boils down to the artist. You can draw and do these things, why not use your artistic skills to get self indulgent!
But if its bothering you at that point you have to think on whether your art is for you or the people you're posting it for online.

Depends on the context and the person. If the person is generally decent, chill, and does exactly what the commissioner wants in the picture without making the insert creepy or tone changing, it's fine. But if they're going out of the way to express ownership, excessive dominance, or constantly just being an ass about things it gets very annoying. Of course, having a character who is actually a fleshed out character helps. It also helps when the color scheme of the character isn't grating to look at too.

Considering that my main OC is supposed to be a self-insert (or self-wishful-thinking-of-what-I'd-rather-be-instead sort of deal), I do understand why some people portray themselves as what they want in regards to their likes, personality, dislikes and so forth. In a sense, it's also wish fulfillment in a fantasy-side of things, allowing the person to explore themselves.

The only times I come to dislike someone's self-insert is only because of subjective nature of the content or ideology they may go for OR if the person behind their OC has done something heinous/questionable, but this is a case-by-case situation.

There's no harm in it, the canon can't be affected and if I like how the OCs/self-inserts look, all the better. I can't count the number of self-insert pics I've seen for different franchises that I've enjoyed.

for me it is kinda depended on the comic itself, like sometimes comics have deep lore or heavy story so self insert is not exactly what is appropriate but in many cases the self insert is the main character or is a major part and so is not distracting.
meanwhile some artists being comics with a renamon or some franchise character they are super in love with and put their self insert in as an excuse to have sex with that character, although to be fair most comics have very thin reasons for any sexual intercourse to happen.
it is also kinda how much respect you will give to a specific character or franchise if the subject matter is such a thing (like turning Judy hops into anything but a country gal with love for the law), to fit the comic sometimes artists change the "personality" or rather how the character "should" act lore wise to give reasons why certain things happen in the comic, I do not oppose any of that, indeed porn is porn and how it is portrayed is very subjective and there is no real "concrete" way to do it, kink is a kink and a fetish is a fetish and if not this artist then another will do it and so at the end of the day it does not matter.
for me I WOULD like when a character that is established previously would actually act like that type of character or personality but that is just me.

I admit that it's been something I wondered about a lot. I even see elements of this when people order YCHs of a sex scene, and it ends up being complete strangers having sex with each other. Of course I see how differently people can approach this. It's not even just "Yup, I have no issues having sex with people I don't know" or "No, never, absolutely not", some people can approach it as "It's just an image with fursonas. It doesn't reflect reality. Just because my fursona is depicted doing something, doesn't mean I'd do it in real life. The preview looked hot, and I wanted to be part of it"

Everyone is free to do what they want , and feel about it the way they want. I don't really draw yiff of my fursona, but theoretically I couldn't imagine myself doing anything with a stranger. Honestly aside from my boyfriend I could only maybe see myself doing something with some copyrighted character, who's not a fursona representing a real person, and even then I'd have to ask my boyfriend for permission.

It makes it harder to avoid seeing the artist as kink candy- especially if their assets, perversions, and escapades are arousing to see. It feels immersive in that interaction gives a sense of engagement with both the person who made the piece and the visual representation that ensnared their libido. Depending on the artist, that kind of sentiment or impression might become a nuisance or mutually arousing, so I suppose the mileage varies all around.

Personally, I like it in that it can be fun as a context of interaction, and if you click with those who engage, it makes for a smooth way to push buttons/get buttons pressed.

Late for the party. Sometimes I find self insertion a total boner killer for pictures depending on the character. If its the artists own OC and its their art they can do whatever they feel but I feel meh about it somehow. xD
