Just some interesing thoughts of the background for these dragons.
Highly unfinished though. Perhaps you can provide me with more ideas?
And it’s kind of rough.Hope you don’t mind.XD
Some Background Info:
In the parallel timeline, pre-FTL engines and thrusters have been built, and human kind can gene-edit themselves into other humanoids and even upload their mind to become robots.
Interstellar exploration starts and some Mediterranean(like), continental planets with alien societies on are found. Plenty of new species are discovered as well.
As demand on resources (minerals, power, etc.) increases, space mining, ore refining and transportation industries are greatly invested. Still, solutions are desperately needed. Meanwhile, they found some creatures can do the job with acceptable efficiency.
Some Creatures: (Some brainstorm of these dragons)
1. Peridotite dragon(s) (Maybe you can consider them as a kind of specie)
They are large reptiles found on a vast Mediterranean planet on which minerals and heat sources are abundant. Thus they have developed a blade-like jaw that can break hard rocks, a special stomach that allow to heat up to high temp. and skins that prevent heat loss. For that, they are naturally born to be walking furnaces (and bulldozers). As a living being on this planet, the compositions of their body are mainly minerals and alloys, making them easily to be converted to real blast furnaces for industrial purpose. Just beware that some of them for their uncontrollable and unpredictable greed. However, the advantage of using them can be significant for the growth of industry.
2. Draules (combination of dragon and M.U.L.E.s)
They are found on a tropical planet. As a specie capable of heavy weight-lifting, being flexible for moving in rough muddy surfaces, they are widely used in transport. Could also be modified to become a drilldozer and sent down to exploit veins. (Thanks retraptor for some further thinking on this.) Their hard work will produce enough ore to feed the giant refining industry.
