I showed him the progress, he made edits, everything went fine, exactly as it should be. and I want to note that during this time he never warned me about his "difficulties". that is, he just pulled to the last. in the end, he started ignoring me completely and didn't pay me a cent.

To be honest depends on the price, I have no problem about paying up front. But on the other hand, I also have been scammed by artist too, right now three 3 artists are considered write off by me. one took ~170 Euro alone.
So, for higher sums, I would prefer paying half and half.
