Well if you ever wanna give it another go, I can reassure you that the fusion system was set up to use items on your weapons. Not weapon on weapon. They gave items a much more use than just upgrading your armor (Even though that's still here.) Enemies dropped the stronger items and the stronger the enemy, the stronger the boost to your weapons. They have a point system represented by a number next to the item. And if you were ever in a pinch, you can get creative and fuse items located around you, including giant spiked steel balls that the enemies try to roll you over with.
As for the non-rusted weapons, they're located in the dark depths. They're the way to go and come in several different classes of strength and durability. There is the traveller class, soldier class, knight class, and royal class which is the strongest. They last nearly up to 3 times longer than they did in BotW so I didn't worry about them as much.
As for Ultrahand, it's not entirely necessary. I didn't find myself relying on it that much unless it called for it. I'd say it's only necessary for about 10 to 20 percent of the game.
Funny enough, I've actually gone back and have been replaying BotW again. Hopefully whatever glitch cause the weapons to never properly level (honestly, I was getting same same weapons at the end of the game as I was 10 hours in) won't happen again.
