Three years later and 500€ for... nothing (slight rant)
Hello hello... I need to get this out of my system.
Three years ago I started getting art/rework for old character I've been playing in table top RPG and/or RP. This is the crazy story of one of those with the latest development happening today.
The main issu is that this character straight up doesn't have art. She only exists in my head. But I found an artist that accepted to draw her from description... they disapeared (with my money).
Then another one..
Then the artist refused to draw the character straight out.
Then another one decided to double their price.
then scammed again.
And so on. In the end I've lost around 500€ total between artists scamming or "disapearing".
Sure you'll say "why don't you draw a first art of her, even badely, to give the artist"... That's the catch, I can't draw. Not only am I terrible, but I hand hurts A LOT when drawing (I suffer from heavy osteoarthritis in my dominant hand, I can barely hold my phone without feeling pain).
Fed up, I used an AI to have something to show artist as a "first piece" for her (I wouldn't call that "art").... And all three I asked basically told me to "f off" and that they won't draw her, and blocked me when I told them I can't draw for the only reason (not hiding it to their credit) of me using an AI. The last one being today.
So what can I do now? Three years later and I can't find an artist who agreed to draw her from an AI piece, I can't post said piece, and when asking from description, they refuse or ask 200bucks and things like that.
Slight note: the character doesn't have any "hardcore" feature or anormal proportion or anything, she is a tall girl with a scar and that's it.
Thank you to the 2 people who will read. I hope you'll have a good day all ^^.

Have you considered trying to create a reference picture using Picrew, Kisekae 2, or something like Honey Select 2 / Koikatsu Party? The first two options are free and might just help you out.

Additionnaly, while I am against AI "art", I don't see why selecting in Kisekae would be ok to an artist while spending hours finding the right prompts and generating on AI would not. I generated several hundreds of pieces before having what I thought to be a suitable bases.
But thanks for your advices nontheless.
Kisekae could be seen as "lazy" (though we could have a conversation about how that might be ableist to people who are literally unable to draw), but it's also harmless by comparison. It hasn't used anyone's art without their permission and will certainly never put a real artist out of business.
If the character is complex to have little refs I'll usually find which ones I can to have an artist commission a rough draft. Its common many more complex characters dont all match up from the first art and old art becomes obsolete (but still cherished) :3.
I dont know many legit artists who will make something from scratch or i'd recommend em. But with the taboo's against Ai art I recommend finding refs online you can get creative with them too. One of my refs for a skink rogue im working on is quite litterly just a real life skink to help paint what they look like then an idea of what a lizard might look like standing upright. My spider OC was built using an actual picture of a peacock spider and an anime art human using terrible drawn circles and lines to convey where their spider bottom mimicing a tail would be and their extra 4 spider limbs and then just squares colored in to show what colors stuff was, then a picture of real life cat eyes for the pupils. As they say sometimes life imitates art the best world building might be abstract parts in the real world.
But just my random 2 cents coming from a person who randomly stumbled upon your post :3! <3
