Once upon a time...

Is it a new thing where artists will PM/DM you to see if you want to commission them? I can't express how deeply uncomfortable that makes me feel! I do not have that sort of money. Everything goes into bills or groceries.

I've never done commissions, but I've also never had someone ask if I wanted one. It must be a new thing for an artist to seek out unsolicited. Very odd.

I don't do commissions either, but this is not the first time this has happened to me. It makes me very unhappy because I want nothing more than to support artists and I just can't.

I have a hard time not responding to folks unless it's clearly a bot or scam.

Had a guy do this to me earlier this year. You're right; it was strange. I said sure and told him I'll pay him when he's done, and he agreed. Couple days later he said he had some emergency, and asked if I could pay for the pic then. So I did. This was months ago and still no art. I guess I bought his silence for $45. Hi Kyle.

Yeah that's new and not good. Mostly folks are desperate. Fewer and fewer folks have the extra money to comission art, but more and more people want to offer their services as artists.

Yeah. It's easy to overlook that asking someone a favor isn't free, even them saying no or ignoring you has an emotional cost for them. Unfortunately, I'm not sure there's any way to stop them.

Not here, but a couple of times on the website formerly known as Twitter. Each led to an account owned by someone obviously using some AI art generator to "draw" the commissions (AI generated garbage/unreadable text or garbled artist signatures, inconsistent art style, hand mutations, unusual graphical artifacts, etc.)
