Bear Talk Tuesday- D&D campaigns!
Share, spill, brag, grieve, you name it! Your own resident bear is on their very first D&D Campaign, and I would LOVE to hear about all of yours! Do you play as furries? Are you experienced, or maybe thinking about trying for the first time? I wanna know!
When I took a shot and took the helm of my own short campaigns between DnD and Star Wars I went a bit more on the fly than I'd like to admit but it made for more interesting encounters and decisions from the players. I splash between some horror themes, to campy, to fun outcomes in DnD, Star Wars had a bit more focus but when I wasn't able to make or attend sessions I had someone else take up the reigns and well, sadly they drove it into the ground by pandering to two people in the group. x'D
I do want to try a small group again through Discord one day and learn 5th Edition DnD, I only really know 3.5E, or restart the Star Wars RPG in the same fashion. But getting a good time for myself and everyone is a bit of a challenge, until then though I just write down some ideas for campaigns or hold onto them until when/if I can get a group going. c:
She always told me the best sessions are those that aren't taken too seriously. Have fun, try things out and if something doesn't work out you can always try a new character.
As for furries... Well, I guess that would only really work with homebrew, no? As in, there have to be stats and traits for the different species? Never really thought about it^^ However, there are of course some playable furry-like species in the DnD lore - not to forget about all of the were-creatures possible.
Containing crazy stuff like some sort of Bunny that sings with her band of loyal goons, handsome lizard men, some crazy wolf with a gas mask, a bunny that is much nicer than the singing one...maybe even related? and...another bunny! Seemingly being strung along by the singing one to become just as vile, hopefully a rootin'tootin puppy stops them, unless there's a tribal bull in the way...
Buddies are mostly playing their OC furries, with a splash of elves here and there.
And mostly everything has a lewd slant to it, obviously, there's a much more fun alternative to Death saving throws, that's a lot less death.
Had everything from a seasoned warrior tripping into the arms of the weakest goon guarding the entrance, to the terrified librarian laying low the elite of the underground criminals and running away embarrassed from the scene.
A couple of tips! Your time with friends is the best part, so try and be cooperative. The best way to do that is using "Yes, and..." Basically, let them do their things and you do your things.
Another good tip is to pick a character trait or personality point and take it pretty far, but only if it doesn't hurt others in the party. Ezera, my wizard, would write books constantly. Like, she'd have a full book written in about two weeks. Most of the books were either her experiments on elementals or the parties adventures. It went on for months until a party member actually read one of her books before they realized in her books she was the leader of the party and all the rest of the party were her minions in the book. Absolutely not the actual party dynamic, but it was hilarious when this small, frail wizard successfully arm wrestled the hulking barbarian in the book because she exemplified a Napoleon complex.
I had a lot of fun with it for a few years back then. Probably the funniest thing was when I thought it would be cool to play as a female character, and my cruel DM decided to make sure I got pregnant.
It was completely a devilish idea that was generated exclusively by our DM. I had to deal with it, because the idea had never occurred to me when I chose to be a female character.
He, of course, didn't do this to any of the other female characters, who were actually played by women.
I took it in stride and found it challenging and amusing. I decided to keep the kid, which was certainly a challenge in itself. I suppose I could have called on the talents of our cleric for an abortion, but WTH. Our games were pretty wild and lighthearted.
She was a half elf thief, BTW. I played other types of characters in other campaigns. I always tried different things for the hell of it.
Most of my favorites were brief one sitting games.
Later i played dnd (mainly as my tiefling monk entropie) and did some short dives into other systems like blades in the dark (very cool) or beyond the wall (also not bad at all) and fate (my least fav of the bunch)
Now I play with a little group of one in a silly lil world i built and my player is the BEST you can imagine :D
I play a furry character in at least three of them though. A deer boy who's the little mecha pilot that could, a bombastic horse who dresses in his renaissance faire best and wields a bow in the middle of a sci fi setting, and another mecha pilot mare who takes a lot of inspiration from Gordon Freeman as he's depicted in Freeman's Mind. Imagine if someone acted like they were in a Russianbadger video, except they're doing so in the middle of actual, real-ass war.
