My FA account is now old enough to drink.
18 years ago is apparently when I bailed out of SheezyArt after they sank themselves for reasons I have long since forgotten, and seeing some recommendations about that young up-and-comer FurAffinity, I hopped on over here and made an account.
I've seen my fair share of things on this site; lots of "I'm leaving forever *comes back two weeks later*" events, the site getting sold and bought back, and so on, but overall FA has been more or less a constant from its beginning. In its design as well as its presence. Call me old-fashioned but I prefer it that way, I don't want FN or Twitter's infinite timeline, I just want a way to browse an artist's gallery and upload my own stuff. There are definitely some features FA really ought to get on but I can understand how much effort it would be to have functional tagging and blacklisting like IB/e6 does at this point, or just how much effort would be required to rename accounts. Best of luck to the volunteers who are trying to work with what is now also a code-base old enough to drink.
At least if anyone on a Discord or whatever needs proof that I'm over 18, I can just link them my FA gallery now.

FA+

Plus can you imagine how awful FA would be with "modern" web design stuff going on? "Oh hey you accidentally clicked on {something horrific} one time? We're going to fill your 'recommended' feed with it!" Noooooooo thank you.
I too much prefer it here than on Twitter. It's easier to get exposure on Twitter thanks to retweets, but it's much harder to actually find anything on Twitter. Even if you know the account of the artist you're looking for, you could be stuck scrolling through years of meme pics to find the specific artwork you want. And while FA certain has its own stints of drama, that's NOTHING compared to the endlessly traumatizing nightmare that Twitter drama can be.
So yeah, would be nice if FA had a few more features, but I'm happy it's actually a proper art gallery site and not just more social media sludge. :P
Anyhow, happy anniversary! Here's to many more years of fun on FA and in the furry community in general. :)
(Side-note: You think you'll get any more art of Anya? She's such a babe.) <3
Anyway, thank you! And I'd love to get more pictures of Anya but it's always a matter of finding an artist who is: 1) Open for commissions, 2) Has a style I like, and 3) Will take the idea I have in mind. More often than not it's a "Pick any two" situation.
(Edit: And happy 18th to your account too!)
- e6 is great to search for specific things by tag but it's not a gallery. To say nothing of its user base.
- I bailed on DA over a decade ago, though I've heard it's better now.
- FA keeps itself going by sticking to being a gallery and not bloating itself with useless features - even if it also lacks some features that would be really nice to have.
- IB has an... exceptionally lenient posting policy, to put it charitably, but it has a functioning blacklist to make up for it. It also has the best support for stories of the sites I've tried so far.
- FN is just Furry Twitter from what I hear (infinitely scrolling timeline), good for being on top of most recent posts from an artist, and terrible as a gallery.
- Weasyl... kinda... exists? I don't really know what niche Weasyl is trying to fill other than being "FA but it looks nicer".
It's good for there to be multiple sites insofar as competition motivates them to improve, and for them to each fill different purposes. But FA is and will likely remain my primary gallery because it serves so well at being that - a gallery. Its simplicity makes it easy to navigate and use. And honestly, the fact that it's still here after 18 years when so many others have come and gone is impressive in and of itself.
