Last year I really got into anime. Like, really, REALLY got into it. Originally I was looking for some different sorts of TV shows to watch while on my stationary bike, and anime ended up working out amazingly for that as watching with subtitles meant I had to stay focused on the screen, thus no phone checking and enough of my brain being taken up both watching and reading that I never got bored and was distracted from the actual exertion of exercise. In the end anime was basically ALL I watched while biking, and that's still true as 2024 begins!
I watched a couple of dozen different shows of different lengths (some single seasons of 12-13 episodes, some spanning over 100+ episodes), and I've still got a bunch more on my watch-list, but I'd love to hear your recommendations! Please bear in mind I'm not really into 'horror' anime, nor particularly violent/dark action shows, so while there's a tonne of amazing ones in that genre, I'm probably not going to watch even the most iconic and well reviewed of them. To give you an idea of where my line is for such content, I really like My Hero Academia (though admittedly the violence in that does ramp up towards the end of the latest season of anime), but I watched the first two seasons of Attack on Titan and gave up part way through the third as it was just... too much, lmao. Also weirdly I'm in the middle of watching Zom100: Bucket List of the Dead and loving that because despite being violent AF it's also super light-hearted in a way that counteracts the grimness of the subject matter. So, feel free to use that as a metric. :D
Beyond that, I like a whole range of anime. Cooking anime? Fuck yeah. Slice of life? Gimmie allllll the slice of life! Sports anime? Absolutely! Fantasy/Isekai? All aboard truck-kun, wheeee!
So yeah, if you've watched any great anime lately or think there's something I absolutely need to watch, let me know! I can't promise I'll watch it, but I'll definitely give it a look and see if it seems like something I'd enjoy. And if you name one I've already watched, I'll tell you how much I enjoyed it. :D :D

FA+

It's REALLY good.
I also liked Pluto on Netflix but that can be a little violent. It's like a thriller/drama/gundam-esque show. Short and good though.
Beastars is good but dark. BNA was fun too but its been awhile since I've seen that so maybe look it up for themes cause I don't remember lol
Durarara!! and Durarara!!x2
Anything that Gainax or Studio Trigger has done...
Space Battleship Yamato (or Space Battleship Yamato 2199, both are fine)
I'm sure somebody will say Cowboy Bebop, and they'd be correct.
My favorite anime ever, no doubt.
Another one I would recommend is Assassination Classroom, which despite it's name is a very very very charming and sweet kind of sci-fi fantasy slice of life with a twist.
Space Battleship Yamato 2199 (Remake of the classic much improved.)
Cowboy Beebop - A classic if you haven’t seen it.
Trigun - Another classic that is well worth it.
Gun Grave
Cells at work
As far as food animes go I've also watched Restaurant to Another World, Campfire Cooking in Another World with my Absurd Skill, Ms Koizumi Loves Ramen Noodles, and Sweetness and Lightning (which isn't wholly a food anime, but does incorporate food as a recurring plot element, and had recipes of the show's food released alongside the manga). I can wholeheartedly recommend all of those if you enjoy food related anime in a range of genres. :3 I'm also waiting on the anime adaptation of Delicious in Dungeon to finish airing, then I'm gonna watch that too. :3
One Piece
Blue Eyed Samurai
Cyberpunk Edgerunners
Frieren
Goblin Slayer
-Trigun.
-Big O.
-Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Second Gig, Solid State Society, and 2049.
-Beastars.
-Dragon Pilot.
-Gate.
-Cowboy Bebop.
-BNA.
-Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet.
-Summer Wars.
Sasaki to Pii-chan: a humble office worker buys a pet bird which turns out to be a magical being from another dimension. After traveling back and forth from that dimension to his own several times, and learning a number of magic spells along the way, he then accidentally becomes enlisted by a secret police force who exist to combat psychic criminals.
Kyuujitsu no Warumono-san: There exists a being of supreme evil, a dark figure who holds the fate of the universe in his hands. But it's his day off and he's currently obsessed with how cute panda bears are.
Scott Pilgrim Takes Off: based on the Scott Pilgrim graphic novel series and starring most of the 2010 film cast; available only on Netflix.
The Masterful Cat is Depressed Again Today: Based on the manga of the same name, an adult woman with a full-time job is so bad at housework that her human-sized pet cat is the master of chores, renovations, cooking, and shopping. All 13 episodes of the anime can be viewed on Ani-One Asia's YouTube channel and Netflix.
Another good just slice of life I enjoyed was Yotsuiro Biyori. It's basically about 4 guys that run a cafe/tea shop and they help their customers. It's really nice and one of my faves. I'd say Food Wars as well =)
I do hope if you get around to the ones I recommended that you enjoy them
Other than that Ancient Magus Bride is also a fantastic story.
Spy x Family is great too, kinda surprised no one has suggested it yet.
If you're into geniuses having pure psychological warfare, you could look at Death Note, though I've only read the manga, so I have no idea if the anime holds up (the 2017 movie does NOT for the record).
I have read Yakitatte!! Japan (cooking anime aroung specifically breadmaking) and loved it, but again, can't comment about the series.
I watched Death Note many years ago, and it's definitely a classic. Dunno how well it would hold up to a re-watch, but I definitely enjoyed it the first time around. :3
Also oooo a breadmaking manga? That's another one to keep my eye out for!
One manga I've started to read in English was Quality Assurance in Another World, which I'm enjoying thoroughly so far. I can also recommend Radiant, if you're willing to give Manfra a try (I do think it's available in English)
1. Nichijou - Extremely random slice of life of random high school students. You will not be disappointed with the laughs. There's a talking cat.
2. Daily Lives of High School Boys - Slice of life about high school boys. REALLY funny.
3. Asobi Asobase - Slice of life about high school girls. One of the top rated funny ass shit anime
If you want sad anime
1. Clannad S1 and S2 - Slice of life about family. I cried every 3 to 4 episodes.
2. Your lie in April - About music and it's just sad.
My current anime watch list is the ongoing series "Undead Unluck". This is a very good anime in my opinion. The story premise is interesting and I ended up reading the entire manga. I'd also recommend Demon Slayer. It's a really REALLY good pick.
I've heard great things about both Clannad and Your Lie in April, but they're both too melancholy for my brain to cope with lmao. <3
Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood: A giant in the world of japanese storytelling, it begins with a quest of two brothers trying to regain their bodies after a horrible event, and expands into a story that encompasses the fate of two nations as the truths hidden in the background start to come to light. Action, fantastic hard-magic system, drama, tragedy, this show has it all. Though fair warning the early parts may seem a bit weak, that's because it's has to dodge around scenes that were used the first time FMA was adapted into an anime. It's worth sticking through though.
Konosuba. Isekai animes are great, but it's even more fun when the tropes of an isekai get turned on their head into both a parody and a love letter to the genre at the same time. The main character gets Truck-Kun'd (kinda) into a world where he ends up party leader, but his party members are all minmaxed to hell and he himself is quite the loser as well. And yet the way they pull things off is so hilarious and engaging at the same time that you can't help but root for these ragtag misfits.
Dr Stone. Do you like science? This is a show that takes an initially absurd premise, the whole world getting petrified and returned to the stone age, and turns it into a journey of humanity's growth, fast tracking major developments in the world of science and the ways in which it impacted human history. Great characters and a fascinating story in the background of course, but the science on display is what drew me personally to it.
Gurren Lagann. In a world where humanity is forced to live underground, two soul-brothers find a mech with a drill that allows them to reach the surface world and begin a story of growth and change that will shape the fate of not just the earth, but the heavens themselves. You want exponential growth in a story, THIS is exponential growth. This show can get rather... stupid at times (see the entire ridiculous bathhouse episode) and some of the early episodes had their animation budget SLASHED (see episode 3 in particular), but even with all that.... The show is just so amazingly GOOD. Dealing with loss, pushing through to a brighter future, a terrifying true enemy, the full impact of human will to succeed, fantastic action and a fascinating soft-magic system hidden underneath, this anime is the king of Giant Robot shows for a reason. Even to this day it still has influence in the anime world, and I think it's well worth your time to push through the worst parts of the early episodes and see why.
Mob Psycho 100: A kid with extraordinary psychic power tries to define himself by anything other than his powers, but constantly ends up having to use them to get by which increases his personal stress and resorts in occasional.... "outbursts". Incredibly deep characters, fun story, heartwarming and heartwrenching at times, and makes some pretty solid points about the way people do, and should, treat each other. It's far superior to its counterpart One Punch Man in my opinion, a story by the same creator.
Tiger & Bunny: In a world where superheroes exist and their careers are sponsored by various businesses like a NASCAR setup, a veteran hero of an older generation gets paired up with a rising newbie who has the same powers as him; different ways of doing things clash, conspiracies unravel, and a father tries to connect with his daughter while keeping his real career a secret from her. This one's just plain fun; the CGI aspects of this anime actually look good, the characters are all a treat on every level, and while there are dark aspects to the story it's primarily optimistic and hopeful.
Ouran High School Host Club: One of the golden classics of anime, this comedic slice of life centers around a low-income student getting shanghai'd into one of the most prestigious clubs at a notoriously wealthy school, and becomes a hospitality host alongside them for daily shenanigans and hilarious occurrences. Haruhi is one of the most rational and practical characters in the history of anime and yet still has a great personality; no Jane Doe's here, and the absurdity of the show is worth as many laughs as its genuine moments are worth warm fuzzies. I'm trying to avoid saying too much here because it's worth seeing the results for yourself.
Lupin III, Part 5: This long-running anime follows the tale of a master thief and his colorful comrades, and their escapades across the world stealing various things and thwarting the authorities. A gentleman thief, Lupin operates by a code of honor with his thefts and always announces his targets ahead of time, and the ways he and his team go through each heist is delightful to watch - as is the attempts by their primary opponent Zenigata to thwart them. I recommend Part 5 specifically because it's the best place to get a taste of every generation of the show; it even includes homage episodes to the past seasons. If you get engaged here, you'll have plenty more Lupin to check out, and if you don't like it then your investment is minimal. Fast-paced, hilarious, intense, clever, Lupin the Third is simply an excellent show.
Spice and Wolf: A romance tale without any sexual connotations, Spice and Wolf follows the tale of a medieval-europe merchant and a spirit of the harvest who ends up being his traveling companion. Slow-paced and comfy, it hits the aspect of romances that many other such tales forget about; two people living their lives but being together while doing it. Simple things like conversation while traveling, various decisions they make while undertaking their respective goals, these are things both of the characters would have done on their own, but instead are doing it TOGETHER. And WANTING to do it together. It's very much worth checking out for that alone, but bonus points if you enjoy the stories of a merchant going around and making profits despite situations that are actually quite dangerous if you think about them.
1. Sword art Online and it's series. (classic players get stuck in VR game Anime)
2. Overlord. (another trapped in a Game anime but as the bad guy!)
3. Bofuri: I don't want to get hurt so I'll max out my defense. (VR Anime wholesomeness)
4. That time I got reincarnated as a slime. ALL of it! (Isekai and wholesome. some violence but not over the top IMO)
5. Slayers, Slayers Next, Slayers tri (CLASSIC fantasy Swordnspells anime)
6. Those who hunt elves. (Comedy/Isekai 3 people trapped by spell need to find fragments of it on elves older and could trigger some.)
let me see some that have not been offered here already.
1. My Neighbor Totoro
2. Princess Mononoke
3. Spirited Away
4. Bleach
5. Lupin the 3rd
6. Avatar the last airbender (not anime but really good)
7. KiKi's delivery Service
8. A certain scientific railgun/magical index.
And one of my FAV ALL time Anime short series.
Samurai 7
