Personal sad news. You have been warned.

On February 6th I took my beloved cat, Tiger, in for an emergency vet visit since for the past week he hadn't been himself (not eating much then weight loss and drinking lots of water and trying to find a place to relax or hide besides his usual places). When the vet looked at him he noticed his stomach being distended and suggested an xray. Turns out Tiger had cancer on his liver and excess fluid and I'd need to go to a specialist to operate on him but he realistically had a low prognosis of survival and life expectancy, a week to a month if lucky as the cancer appeared to be aggressive.
I don't recall the exact date I found him (he was a stray on the street) but I know about when he was beginning to be in my life since we took a few photos post him getting fixed.
For sure 11 years 9 months 15 days in my family (parents and me as well as my sisters and their family) but probably he was closer to 12 or 13. April, 22 2012 - February, 6 2024. Rest in peace friend.

I know just how you feel. I lost my childhood cat, Copper, after 20 years. He passed on 01-13-2014.

OP
They become more than pets, they become friends and family. I miss him a lot and know the road to emotional recovery will be hard but I've read that trying to maintain routines is good to help process the grieving and ground myself. I hope it is, I don't want his death to also be the end of my joy and happiness.
