I'M MAKING ANOTHER GAME PLEASE HELP
I'm making a short (30 minute) Ren'py game with Raiko to prepare for a larger project and told myself I'd make it public. Now that I'm at the point where I'm pulling assets together, what I discovered is there is a severe lack of fantasy visual novel assets for free use -- backgrounds specifically.
I'm not using AI nor have I found a way to convert free use photos into illustration-esque backgrounds. Can anybody suggest where I can get or make (non-AI) static background images for my silly demo game? Most repositories like itch.io have backgrounds assets that are AI-generated, so... kind of defeats the purpose.

You could try to mess around with paint.net for example to make photos look varying degrees of digital oil painty. If you have no experience with it but want to see what results you can get, I might be able to help.

I did end up using this as a solution via Krita! Not as nice as I'd like, but they get the job done for what is more or less a quick test game. ;3

Glad you found a solution! Can't wait to see what you whip up :d

I use "bitmap trace" in Flash 8 with random numbers in the boxes to make cool backgrounds out of photos, but that may be a bit of a long walk (to say nothing of that portable copy of the software probably only getting harder to find as animation circles move on)

I found a solution through Krita filters but this sounds cool too!

I could try to whip up a few basic backgrounds for you depending on what you want :) no cost, just played and enjoyed your games before, shoot me a note if you like

You're very sweet to offer! I found a fine enough solution by filtering free domain images into oil painting sort of things? Works for a test game. ;3 Keep being a good rubber toy for me in the meantime.

If you don't wana shell out for Photoshop, Photopea is a free web-based alternative.
