im not very knowledgeable about this stuff so you may have to do a good bit more digging than i could, Anyone selling adult art is basically regarded as a High-Risk Merchant.
It makes sites that aren't designed to cater to adult content a nightmare too. See the whole debacle with twitter right now and the likely path they'll go down to drag back advertisers repeating a 1 to 1 of what tumblr did to "be more advertiser friendly." Just a matter of time on that one.
What does this mean as an adult content artist? - an endless game of playing hot potato with whoever's willing to be the payment processing group of the day. Generally speaking you're safer using non-us based processors. Think the gold standard is EU merchant services for non-US based processing and for US based it's CCBill (and both of these come with their own baggage that still sucks) until they too decide to get the "the investors say no" bug.
So damn, it is still uneasy for many artist to make bank.
What about subscribe star, thoughts or ideas on alternatives?
Unfortunately don't know anything about subscribe star
It's pretty much gotten to the point of "make your own site and chose a payment processor" for people doing art packs.
For payment processing - KoFi seems to be the least problematic for US based at the moment. I do not know if they work well for posting things like patreon tiers.
Boosty has pretty much become the go-to for payment processing outside the US, it treats everything like a donations. Biggest downside is boosty can take up to 90 days to process ANYTHING.
