what a week (bad medical news)
Welp on Monday I went to the doctor for the results of my first checkup in awhile, and turns out I have type 2 diabetes, so I got that goin for me. It explains a lot about why I was thirsty and peeing a lot and getting weird pains/cramps in my legs and feet.
The next few days were a whirlwind of being bombarded with information from all sides, how to glucose monitor, ozempic, metformin, insurance forms, finger prick tests, a complete overhaul of my eating habits and grocery shopping, and through it all a low level sense of panic and shame. how did i let this get to this point. I knew I was 'prediabetic' but didn't really see that as a problem. I have apparently had diabetic level blood glucose for several years without knowing it.
Only now am I starting to get some kind of handle on the situation. Its a little scary to think that i have this condition now and its just going to be like this forever. I can lose a bunch of weight (and will) but I'm going to be a Diabetic for the rest of my life. I will not be able to be casual about food from here on in. Its manageable, my mom's had it for 20 years, but .. eat healthy, kids. dont be like me.

I know the feels about having to lose a ton of weight and having to be careful about what you eat.
Luckily its caught early and I hope your A1C wasn't too high. Catching it now will really improve your health chances and improve your prognosis over the long term.
Its also easier to manage now than later for sure.
My A1C has been fluctuating between 10-12% for years before starting Ozempic a few months ago. Three months after starting, my A1C was 6.9%. You should start on Metformin for now since that is the safer beginning for diabetes drugs. The whole weight loss thing is different for people. I gained about 20 pounds after starting Ozempic because the diabetes was making me lose weight unconditionally.
The pains/cramps might be diabetic neuropathy. That can't be reversed, but there's medicine for that will make it less noticeable/more comfortable. If they prescribe you Gabapentin, you might have relaxation of the external urethra sphincter leading to some incontinence but that's what diapers are for!
Diabeties sucks, but you can control it or get oit in better control and have yyour body slowly heal itself. just be diligent on checking your bblood sugars often, and you should be ok.
I may recommend to see if you can get a Constant Glucose Meter (CGM) like a Dexcom g7, that stays on you for 10 days at a time. Always checking your sugar levels every 5-20 mins. that was a huge help for me.
I am a type 1 diabetic so my needs are going to be different than yours. but im willing to chat about that stuff with you, if that would help you at all. Been stuck with this 22 years now.
it seems to me that the real line between hardcore gamers and filthy casuals is insulin shots. I am not yet at the insulin level
And it is possible to get your A1c down with good management. I know, I've done it (although I've faltered recently, but I'm doing it again).
Best of luck - you can do dis!
I’ve been adjusting my lifestyle to hopefully not develop it, but the truth is that for a lot of people it’s a genetic condition and your diet does influence it but it can eventually just crop up as you age even if your diet’s alright. There is no shame in it, and as long as you take care of yourself you should be fine. If you ever need support tho I’m all ears. I wish you the best of luck on your journey, so long as it’s managed well you can live a perfectly fine life and there’s plenty of good food for diabetics! I like to experiment with various sweeteners, myself, so far I’ve found Sweet N Low is a good replacement for sugar in my morning coffee that doesn’t cause my BS to go up any (no good for baking though).
However it goes, good luck.
How can we support you best right now?
