Will lack of clients make me take extreme measures?
I just went into my DeviantArt profile... and almost threw up.
I used to love deviant art. Well, my first step as a professional NSFW artist started there. wasn't safe from some bullshit but was really a nice place for me. Now all I can see is bullshit. profile posting random images from internet, AI, AI and more AI (theres even a paid AI creator from deviantart itself), memes...
And I know I can still find good people and clients there... but man... *sigh*
you guys would recommend another option beside deviantart, twitter and inkbunny?

With you mentioning the potential for goign to extremes...the implications there aren't great. While there are certain...individuals who will pay well for certain taboo content, it isn't worth throwing your reputation away. I've seen too many artists fall into that trap when desperate for income, and most have regretted it in the end.
So please, just keep putting your name out there, post regular commission reminders and other adverts. Tenacity will pay off better in the long run.
yeah you're right. I was having a constant flow of commissions for like years.. what's getting me worried (and I didn't gave a background on this) is the drop from constant to almost 0 since last month... I know this could be just a bad month, but never happened nothing even near that, not even when pandemic started and economy went crazy for a moment... I try to find why.. increase of golddigger artists selling generic clones for less then 5usd, AI art... dunno. this is out there for a while and haven't been a problem to me.
extreme measures was a joke about getting back to DevArt XD
but sure you're right about get out there in other plataforms. I like here so much I became dependent of it.
nah, I wouldn't do commission of things I don't enjoy or bothers me. My kink spectre is large enough, I have another alias for more kinky stuff. Also I'm a designer too, I just doesnt want to go back to this, I'm really loving doing only commissions for a living
will do! and thanks again for your words!
Social media (any site that is) usually = bigger broader numbers. The more niche something is, the smaller the audience and the smaller the CHANCE at money, let alone actually getting it. Most youtubers are only seeing like 15% of their "watchers" ,or people consuming this content, actually subscribing. HERE on FA, demiceour posted a journal about pirating, but mentioned her own numbers. 1% of her entire audience buys ANYTHING. Art - merch - patreon etc. This is... usually pretty accurate for the average person online posting their own art. Shit is rough and there's just no 1 single answer to fix the struggle so many are facing right now. You're not fighting to be "good at art", you're fighting algorithms, the 4053 different fragments of spaces to post, and an economy comparable to the great depression. That last part is not a joke.
Twitter is (for now) still the biggest, and close to it is facebook. They are not art sites and they likely never will be. Deviantart IS an art site with social media aspects, but in order to make money to cover exorbitant storage costs, the site has changed drastically over the years to meet those demands. Hosting images and using servers is THOUSANDS of dollars MONTHLY and so sites do some wild shit to make ends meet now. Wasn't like that in 2010, but it sure is now XD.
ALso please know that you not selling art isn't your fault. It was already an incredible difficult thing, and now it's harder. People have significantly less money than 2010 (my metric, this is when I got started), there's also like 7x the artists there use to be. FA here is a niche of a niche of a niche and while there are people here, it's a scrap/fight to get attention and this is one of the E A S I E S T sites for that. You're fighting a much harder battle now than you would have been and that's sadly part of time marching on :<. I've also personally noticed activity here steadily and fairly quickly declining. This could be skewed tho, as much of my audience is probably closer to 30 now and might just be loosing interest. Take that with some salt as they say.
Like in 2015 (just for an example), monthly I'd get maybe 30 or 40 commissions. Requests anyways. People always coming by and wanting stuff, only thing limiting me was me. Now? Two wars, 3 "recessions", 3-5 Housing market busts, inflation is astronomical and we are not making more money. Minimum wage per hour where I live is 7$ :"). Still. SO like you could literally be the next 6 million dollar red box painting guy, but right now people are so strapped for income they couldn't buy it a lot of the times even if they want too. Many of the 30-40 folks hitting me up for art, are now maybe 8 total. Monthly. Shit is h a r d, and I cannot overstat this.
Please understand I'm not telling you this to berate you, be mean, condescending or cruel. However if you're considering other options in life and have the ability too, you might want too. I have 7k followers here and almost 4k images between deviantart and furaffinity. I make roughly 5000$ a year. IT comes out to about 2$ an hour. It's not worth destroying how much you love art to be miserable and then also hate the art. I've seen this happen so fucking much my dude, don't let it consume you :_:.
Don't draw stuff you dont' like. Don't force yourself to be miserable, and I hope to the universe and back that you know it's not your fault. You can't fix the insanity right now. And even tho your art kicks ass, the world is currently just on metaphorical and literal fire.
I wish I could blame AI art, but it hasn't impacted me at all no joke. I see people talk about it alot, but it hasn't actually taken any of my customers. When someone wants your art, they want it BECAUSE it's your art. People who just want cheap shit for the sake of having it didn't want your art anyways. They just want dopamine and free stuff XD. Don't let the topic psych you out.
