I'd say the best way is to do a 'Ask if you want to come on my server' tactic. Because opening it up to everyone can be a floodgate to all sorts of strange people. :O

I recommend making a post about a Discord server but not making the link public, as anyone can join and it may bring in unwanted people. Otherwise, you can make the link public, but make it that in the Discord server newcomers have to make a mandatory introduction such as giving some basic info about themselves such as their social media links before they can see the rest of the server.

Yeah I do believe at first I'll be just handing out invites via DM's (notes on FA) just to make sure people don't join who might be bad actors...

But eventually if things go well and I get some tight moderation in my server, I might be able to open it to public, however that idea seems far off at the moment 😅

And that's also a good idea! Having some social links to confirm it's the person who's joining, that sounds pretty good, although I think some people might be shy about it, might scare them a bit to share anything about themselves.

I used to be a server mod/owner and we made it that people had to give their social links. There was some people who didn’t want to give there’s publiclly in their intros cause they wanted to remain private so instead we had them dm one of the mods privately so at least we knew who they are. I think I ince dealt with someone who straight up refused to give their social media to any of our mods even in private and ended up leaving the server. But I think this is a rare case!
