How does art work as a wage job?
I’ve always figured artists charge a flat rate for a few reasons. It’s freelance, you work on your own time already, and people can easily fake those numbers to drive up the price. This model doesn’t make any sense to me

I have a timer program I use on my computer. When I actively work, the timer ticks up. When I idle for 10 seconds or tab-out, the program pauses the timer.

I then round my time-spent to the nearest 15 minutes in the end. This also works in time spent for alterations / edits done to the picture, if requested.

EDIT: I also generally have this program up on my screen as well during streams.

That’s fine and all, but time spent isn’t always relative to the final product. I get that you’re a professional and your muscle memory probably lets you work quickly, but I feel like most people would rather have a concrete expectation on progress going in for how much they’re going to be spending

So far -- I have had no complaints.

I don't know if I've seen another artist charge this way, but it makes sense. Honestly I wouldn't mind seeing it more often, it personally lets me worry a lot less if the only variable is how many hours are spent. Other artists charge individually for different stages, complexity, number of corrections etc. which is a lot more to think about.

Neil has done so much for artists of all kind everywhere in the background. Also am just a big fan of his works and humor in general. Even today catching a podcast with em brings back da good old days.
Can always count on em to value the time and work of other artists!

Are you aware of your general time taken for the various levels/colorations of art?
Like how much time on average you take for a sketch, flat, shaded coloring at Head, Bust, half body and full body level? Generally when it comes to hourly rate artists, one of my hang ups is not having an easy frame of reference of reference... sort of like, purchasing a gallon of milk compared to a fill your own container of milk with no measurement but the price

I recommend to start at LEAST having a budget of 500USD. This doesn't mean it will all get used, but it's the best 'round number' ballpark I can give for something of that length.
