For those of you who fondly recall MechWarrior 2...

Consider Mektek's latest development, the Assault Tech program.
Assault Tech is more or less Classic BattleTech rules in the fast paced simulation setup we know and love. Judging by the details shown in their promotional videos, this means that damage can and will rack up fast, but the realization that even your vaunted Mad Dog or Dire Wolf can suddenly eat a dual-PPC sandwich from a Warhammer and leave you watching your missile ammo cook off may give even hardened veterans of the series a new bit of anxiety...then again, what's taking the field without a little risk?
The game is based more or less in MechWarrior 2's function, with 3's weapons system, and 4/MechAssault's level of detail, only moreso. Give it a look. Multi player and single player options are available.
More details can be found at http://www.mektek.net/projects/at1/promo/, along with the impending public beta.

You're thinking of 4's hard point system.
3 was the closest to Classic Battletech as far as customizations (even if it didnt reflect it in the model of the game).
4 was the one they changed to "only Ballistic goes here" and "only energy goes here" setup.
It totally NERFED omni-mechs, They became useless (like example, usually i changed out a Madcat II's gauss for CERPPCS becuase i am an energy whore. Couldn't do that in MW4)
While it's definitely far from the most honest interpretation of the table top rules, it managed to be both fun and incredibly accessible, to the point of MekTek's vaunted MekPaks being developed and released three times over.
2 actually remained the most honest in the 'Mech Bay--3's variety of equipment buffs, including jump jet, targeting computer, and MASC gear, made for strangely underweight stock models. Its weapons physics, however, remained some of the truest so far, pulse weapons aside.
*Slam hir fist down on the Ammunition Ejection button(Alt-K XD) and continues hammering away with lasers*
Just hope they dont have reflective armor >_<
