Drawtober 2024 - Review

<BREAKING NEWS>
Another year, another October...Happy Halloween!
I've finally finished a long 31 days of drawings leading up to Halloween and I've really enjoyed it. Definitely have improved since last year, and I've taken on more interesting subjects that I really wouldn't normally do; for example horses (like the Kelpie and Dragon) and Japanese Yokai.
I thought I would go over these and comment on how each one went so I can see how my skills have progressed.
Day 1 – Gravestone Skeleton (MediEvil)
First up was a familar face I've known since I played it in 1998, the skeleton dude who sits behind a gravestone who acts as the menu select in the video game MediEvil. I thought he would make a good start, kind of like introducing you to my Drawtober for the next 30 days.
Day 2 – Roper (DnD monster)
Like the year before, I did do some monsters from Dungeons & Dragons; they are rather effective creatures in terms of horror. This year I tried a new monster called the Roper; lots of tentacles, toothy mouth and a big gleeming eye. I liked drawing him.
Day 3 – Jack O'Lantern (Phenomenon)
On this day I was tired from work, so I had to make something quickly but it actually came out alright, the fire was really good.
Day 4 – Cloaker (DnD Monster)
Another monster from Dungeons & Dragons, I thought I at this point people would start getting bored of them for Drawtober, so I moved on to other things. The mouth was my favourite part to draw, and the shape of it's manta ray-like body was nice.
Day 5 – Baba Yaga (Slavic Mythological Figure)
Something that I have never attempted, that came out alright, but I think it could of used a bit more time in the oven. Drawing old ladies is not my forte!
Day 6 – Gorgon (Greek Mythology)
This Drawtober was all about testing myself, trying out new things; the Gorgon was a good attempt at getting me out of my comfort zone.
Day 7 – Skull Spider (Monster)
I thought this quite good idea but apparently not everyone liked it, judging from the lack of views and faves. Looking back on it, I might have made it too dark and the skull didn't mesh well with the spider body. Overall not my favourite for this Drawtober.
Day 8 – Wraith (Undead)
Back to undead basics, simple but effective!
Day 9 – Ghoul (Undead)
Like last year I did a classic zombie, this year I did a sort of upgrade to it. I did enjoy doing it back I'm not sure everyone else appreciated the blood and gore.
Day 10 – Lich (Undead)
I was in a undead phase and I couldn't stop, the Lich was the next step. Never done a lich before, so many folds of cloak to draw!
Day 11 – Crawling Hand (Undead)
What else can I say? This was another day of "getting back from work tired and oh dear I need to draw something" so I thought about a relatively easy thing to do: a disembodied hand. It actually didn't look half bad, I liked it.
Day 12 – Death Knight (Undead)
I struggled to get the pose for this one, so I had to salvage a previous drawing I did to get the right sort of image. The result was kinda menacing which was the effect I was going for.
Day 13 – Intellect Devourer (DnD Monster)
Back to Dungeons & Dragon monsters. Reading up about what this monster could do did disturb me, so I had to draw it! I usually hate aberrations in DnD because of their alien nature and eldritch powers, drawing this helped combat my fear.
Day 14 – Kasa-obake (Japanese Yokai)
I never did Japanese monsters last year, and this year was all about new things so I drew this. I really enjoyed doing and Yokai are such interesting creatures to draw! Any object in a Japanese household can be considered a Yokai if it does get possessed.
Day 15 – Kappa (Japanese Yokai)
I thought about doing the Kraken, but I decided to continue with the Yokai. I liked drawing this guy.
Day 16 – Goblin (Fantasy Race)
Not my favourite, just a quick and easy one. I was tired.
Day 17 – Dark Elf (Fantasy Race)
Had to use a reference pose for this one but it came out very nicely.
Day 18 – Lost Soul (DOOM)
Decided to dip into a video game classic and did everyone's most hated monster. Seriously these guys were numerous and annoying to fight. I was rather pleased when I found a filter for the fire behind the skull, made it look quite cool.
Day 19 – Imp (DOOM)
Another Doom monster, the pose was good and I found an interesting brush setting which added to his skin texture.
Day 20 – Kelpie (Folklore)
My first horse drawing, never done anything like this! However when I finished, it looked more like a Hippocampus than a Kelpie, but that's just nitpicking.
Day 21 – Bat Demon (Demon)
I've done demons before, so I tried mixing it up slightly. It came out brilliantly!
Day 22 – Nothic (DnD Monster)
Quite a scary monster from the DnD lineup, and it's one of my favourite monsters I've done for Drawtober. He's got quite a cheeky grin!
Day 23 – Bicephalous Horror (Undead)
I can only apologise for this rather disturbing image. Still, makes a good undead monster.
Day 24 – Bai Ze (Chinese Mythology)
This drawing was done days before the 24th and it was late one evening, too late to do a drawing before midnight. So, admittedly, I adapted it for Drawtober, but actually it turned out the history for Bai Ze made him suitable for Drawtober anyway.
Day 25 – Grell (DnD Monster)
Second to last DnD monster before I finally stopped doing them. I really enjoyed drawing him, wasn't too bad drawing all those tentacles!
Day 26 – Violet Fungus (DnD Monster)
My least favourite DnD monster because it gave it me a hard time during my first game. I couldn't even kill it, so I ran! One day...I'll get my revenge.
Day 27 – Shadow Demon (MediEvil)
Back to my favourite game, I learned from the Skull Spider that too much dark can make the picture difficult to see, so what do you do with a being that's made of shadows? Answer: Blue.
Day 28 – Stained Glass Demon (MediEvil)
First boss of MediEvil, and I had a hard time drawing him. Didn't particularly enjoy the end product but hey, another one in the bag. I think it's because I overdid the effects, still lesson learned.
Day 29 – Cyclops (Greek Mythology)
An odd entry, not even remotely scary but it was to me when I was kid watching the 7th voyage of Sinbad.
Day 30 – Death Dragon (Fantasy Creature)
I've never done a dragon for Drawtober before, but this was a good one and I loved drawing him.
Day 31 – Headless Horseman (Folklore)
Lastly, I thought I'd end Drawtober on a big high so I did another horse based mythical figure. My favourite throughout the whole series.
So there you go, not bad for 2024! Did you guys like it? What was your favourite?
I will continue to draw, even after Halloween is over. This Drawtober was good for me to get out of my comfort zone and try out new things. I'll try and keep up with my drawings; I don't want to stop like I did last year. I think the most important thing I've learned is to pace yourself when doing art.
Happy Halloween! 🎃
I think I too much fun with the color codes...
