Bluesky's far from perfect and there's still work to be done (like, videos and gifs were just recently added), but so far it's pretty friendly to artists thanks to its moderation tools.

I find the move towards Bluesky really funny considering how quick people are to praise Bluesky and lambast Twitter despite the two sites being ostensibly the same thing. Like, people left Twitter because they didn't want their posts being used for AI training, only for Bluesky to start doing the same thing. The more things change, the more they stay the same, am I right?

For artists and creatives specifically, I don't think it's the best alternative out there, since, just like Twitter, it's a social media site first and foremost. Even if it has better basic functionality, it's still not built with organized content sharing as the focus. I also doubt that it'll stay "good" once it attracts more users and has to start looking for ways to make money and appease investors. It wasn't that long ago when Twitter seemed like a hot new alternative to the social media sites people were using. How soon we forget...

Where did you hear about Bluesky starting to use post/images for AI training? Is there a source on that?

While I do like the website more, it's still deff' not an ideal place to post art.

Bluesky doesn't have any protections against content-scraping bots that collect stuff for AI datasets. The site itself may not be collecting user content for AI training directly, but it's more than happy to let other companies scrape for data and train their bots off of it, instead. This has already been happening on Twitter for a while, too, but only recently have they been more explicit in outlining their usage of user data for their own AI program. I guess Elon Musk using posts from a website he owns to train an AI he also owns is just a bridge too far, for some people.

For the record, I'm not the type to care about this at all. Having your work stolen or otherwise repurposed is just the risk you take when posting stuff online. However, I do find it funny how people are moralizing their switch to Bluesky when the stuff it does with your data isn't all that different from what Twitter was already doing with it, or any other social media site, for that matter.

Bluesky can easily be scraped by bots for AI data. Honestly nowhere is safe for artists to have their art be used in AI. Even for artists who only have a Furaffinity account, that art gets re-posted on e621 which gets scraped by bots all the time (I know because I've seen that AI art posted on Deviantart).

I had literally started an X account for commission/fetish uploads 2 weeks before killing it off and making a Bluesky when X announced the sitewide AI scraping.
I wouldn't even consider trying to start a new X account right now. It's a redirect. That's all.

Honestly really wish Itaku got more of a push than Bluesky, because that website is actually made for artists. Which Bluesky isn't, you can't even upload Gifs yet and the image quality is lower than Twitter and even Furaffinity. The social media part isn't that great either, feed on my main account is full of the most reddit-type humor, at least Twitter was entertaining. Honestly if it wasn't for the constant enshitification of Twitter I would've been against the move entirely, but people gotta send a message somehow I guess.
