Never had my own Lionel setup. My dad was into HO gauge when I was a kid and I gravitated to that right off the bat... Not that I didn't WANT Lionel trains - they're all kinds of awesome :D
Yow! ‘Long time back, I knew a kid who wanted a train set. For Christmas his folks gave him a Lady Lionel set. They thought the pastel colors on the locomotive and cars looked nicer than the usual drab railroad livery on the standard Lionel trains. He played with the set, but I was one of his few friends that he ever let see it. It was a girls toy, and he knew that if it got out that he was playing with something meant just for girls, the other kids would make his life a living schoolyard hell. I never said anything about it, and neither did the other two friends whom he showed that set to. It was his little sister that finked on him. Even though it was meant for her gender, he wouldn’t let her play with his Lady Lionel train, and she complained to her friends, and pretty soon the word was out, and he was Christmas goose cooked. After the harassment died down, he kept the Lady Lionel in its box under his bed, then later gave it to a not very bright cousin from the poor side of the family, telling his folks that he’d outgrown toy trains. They excepted that, praised him for his generosity, but afterwards he was very, very careful about what he asked for for Christmas.

Reminds me of my Lionel layout that I had as a kid back in 1965. Except not as much cool stuff on mine.
