Did see a number of artists over on artstation they're work seems to end up in movies and games quite often, could be worth a look.

ive worked in parts of the vfx industry before but i have no direct art contacts unfortunately. but i have spoken to and befriended a lot of artists who worked there and still do in the industry.
most of them start local and small, working their way into studios and full time jobs with a history of successful client work. i dont know where you are but sites like :

can be good to get you knowing whats about. a good artstation is great but a lot of the time studios just want someone close and reliable. having a person who can fit a brief is really attractive to hiring teams.
when applying to places, make sure you only send work relevant to what you are applying for, a multi skilled artist in 2d and 3d isnt useful when they just want 2d.
in terms of getting contacts, attend art events and conferences like https://www.viewconference.it/ irl and see what people have and do in your area. find people on linkedin doing art and go through their history of work and see how they started and what they were doing. try and find some common ground or bring cards to it and people will remember you.
