2009 meme
I can't sleep and I've never done one of these meme things so let's see what all the kids are twitting about these days.
1. What did you do in 2009 that you’d never done before?
I saw some personal projects from start to finish.
I took interest in a celebrity's life.
I failed a class (despite getting As in every other).
I didn't get my life or livelihood threatened by a member of my immediate family.
I completed my first contract job.
I had sex wearing a dog collar (note: pretty good).
I participated in a journal meme.
2. Did you keep your New Years’ resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I'm not in the habit. I try to make and keep resolutions year-round. As for cliched new year goals, even though I'm now a healthy weight I'm going to try and continue losing until my abs have more definition.
3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
Nope.
4. Did anyone close to you die?
I hardly knew my grandmother, so no.
5. What countries did you visit?
None.
6. What would you like to have in 2010 that you lacked in 2009?
Independence.
Privacy.
7. What dates from 2009 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
June 25. Michael Jackson died and I cared. I didn't care about him at all before. Out of curiosity afterward I learned about his life and came to realise just in the past couple weeks what it was that made me identify with him so strongly.
My grandmother's funeral, whenever that was. I met my father's side of my extended family for the first time. It was somewhat surreal.
Many things as, more, and less (but notably) important than this happened, but don't have a definitive date associated, at least one that I can remember. Everything was either an extended period (my job at the hospital, the Summer) or a series of related moments (some wonderful weekends/dinners with my girlfriend).
8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Overcoming much of the severe anxiety and frustration that is constantly with me.
9. What was your biggest failure?
Failing numerical mathematics. There is (are?) a myriad of reasons it was beyond my control, however.
10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Nothing new.
11. What was the best thing you bought?
I probably enjoyed Christmas shopping for my dearest the most, as panicked as I was due to the fact my original ideas weren't panning out.
I don't think I've had money to buy anything of significance the rest of the year.
12. Whose behavior merited celebration?
My girlfriend's. She is so supportive, caring, generous, tolerant, and sincere that it's bringing tears to my eyes just relating it right now. I can always trust her to be honest with me in the best and worst of times, and I wouldn't be who I am today if it wasn't for her.
I hope if she reads this that she doesn't think I intended for her to read this because I'm honestly just thinking aloud. I'm sure I'll be embarassed regardless and not be sure what the correct way to react is, though.
13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
Toss up between my father's overbearing and semi-intentionally selfish nature and various university staff due to their misanthropic arrogance and general incompetence. Since my father is at least well intentioned I say the university staff wins.
I'm sure my mother did something but I don't want to find out.
14. Where did most of your money go?
Tuition, rent, food.
15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Going to the gym some days at work.
Working on music on days I was feeling musical, grasping that fleeting sensation of enlightenment that justifies one's existence in a way that only creative work can do. Harnessing the harmony of the universe like a swirling aether at your fingertips, hinting that some beauty in the universe is absolute and eternal, and that one person can have an impact on the way that thousands perceive it.
I'm not that good yet but the feeling still comes, for some reason.
16. What song will always remind you of 2009?
Anything of MJ's. Possibly Xscape.
17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
a) happier or sadder? happier
b) thinner or fatter? thinner
c) richer or poorer? richer
Well I guess if you're going to put it that way I shouldn't be complaining so much.
18. What do you wish you’d done more of?
Music and other recreation in the evenings where I was so downtrodden or headache ridden that I couldn't focus.
19. What do you wish you’d done less of?
Schoolwork, tiptoeing around my father's volatility.
20. How will you be spending Christmas?
At my house, eating lots, I assume reading the manual for my brand new moonship.
21. Did you fall in love in 2009?
Nope.
22. How many one-night stands?
If the same parter counts because you're only with them one night then lots but not enough.
If a drawing counts then uh...like 400 megs worth.
23. What was your favorite TV program?
Colbert Report.
24. Do you hate anyone now that you didn’t hate this time last year?
I guess no one new.
I can't stay mad at Glenn Beck. He's adorable.
25. What was the best book you read?
I did not read one book.
26. What was your greatest musical discovery?
That there is merit in places I never expected. One shouldn't assume popularity or production values will necessarily result in reduced quality, nor the inverse, and that one should not be biased with regard to genre.
On the technical side I learned reduced listening and can identify frequency ranges with reasonable accuracy now. I also now understand the mastering process and stripped down the imposing unknown of intelligent compressor/EQ use.
27. What did you want and get?
Uh...Left 4 Dead 2 I suppose.
28. What did you want and not get?
Independence.
Privacy.
Testosterone treatment.
29. What was your favorite film of this year?
I was sincerely surprised by how excellent The Kingdom was. I don't think I saw any movies made this year. I can't even remember if I saw any older movies that I really liked this year.
30. What did you do on your birthday?
Sat at home and angsted over whether I was making the correct responses. I probably also studied.
31. What is one thing that would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
A foreskin.
32. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2009?
The same God damn charity clothes my father and I got when we were homeless, plus some 10 dollar sales at Walmart.
33. What kept you sane?
vlcice
34. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
MJ.
35. What political issue stirred you the most?
Animal rights as usual.
36. Who did you miss?
vlcice
37. Who was the best new person you met?
I don't think I met one new person that I liked.
38. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2009:
Effort is not proportional to results.
39. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year:
I'm doing science, and I'm still alive.
